Larry Hyde Carneros Chardonnay 2019

9.2

Annual birthday WWC hosting. As normal, 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds, 1 dessert, all presented blind.

As part of my white wine flight theme, I wanted to compare Hyde and Hudson side by side, then finish with Kongsgaard, since it is a blend of both.

Initial reaction is this presents much differently than other Hyde Chardonnay offerings. Aromatically, there is a green/herbal flair that has many guessing Chablis. Tart lemon and honeysuckle too. Once on the palate, the warmth and round profile brought everyone back to Cali. Good vein of acidity (most Hyde offerings do). Balanced by both citrus and tropical notes…oak isn’t playing a big part. Reminds me of Massican’s Hyde vineyard Chardonnay. Open now with a decant or hold a couple years.

Domaine Roulot

Meursault - Charmes 1er Cru Chardonnay 2002

Light canary gold color. Inspiring nose. Notes of citrus, white clay, cardamom, tan spice and some white flowers. Young and fat in the mouth at first, flabby. But with 7-8 hours of air, this explodes with acidity to match the voluptuous fruit. Long finish. Taken to the new Chez Noir in Carmel (really good food - they will eventually get a star!). Sadly my last bottle of this, which easily had 10+ more years to go. Outstanding juice. — a year ago

Domaine François Raveneau

Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 1999

Taken to Hawksmoor in NYC for our uncle’s 75th. Decanted in hotel for 7 hrs before dinner. Light to medium gold color, heavy in the glass. At first the nose is muted with light citrus and white flower notes. Late in the evening after 10 hrs of air this finally blossomed into the Raveneau they is known and loved. Notes of citrus fruit, ocean breeze, kiwi, white stone, white clay and tan spice. Acidity finally came on too. Great wine but still too young. Needs 5-10 years of additional age to be in the ”go” zone. 94++ — a year ago

Tan Fruit

Dux Vineyard Chardonnay 2019

Very special wine from this very small vineyard outside Newburgh, Oregon. Near perfect harmony with fruit and acid. Nice balance. five years old now and with more years could be even better. — 10 days ago

Domaine François Raveneau

Blanchot Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2000

Taken to Canoe House at the Mauna Lani on the Big Island. Awesome aged Raveneau nose. Rich and heavy in the mouth. Notes of citrus, apricot, sea shells, white clay and tan spice. In the zone. Shared a glass with our server/somm. When the bill came, “we have a strict corkage policy but it’s waived when it’s Raveneau “. Ha! — a year ago

Domaine Coche-Dury (J.F. Coche Dury)

Meursault Chardonnay 2004

Taken to Selby's in Redwood City. Medium gold color. Heavy in the glass. Killer nose with notes of apricot, petrol, citrus, wet river stone and lots of tan spice. Palate staining in the mouth with a ton of acidity that is balanced against the rich fruit. Can't believe this is a Village wine. — 2 years ago

Nose displays tropical fruits along with lemon zest. Beautiful delineation on the mid palate with pineapple, pears and honeycomb. Great viscosity and balance with perfect acidity. Finished sweet and exotic. Outstanding. — 2 months ago

Domaine Ramonet

Les Ruchottes Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2004

A late evening pop and pour. Light canary gold color. Notes of citrus and white stones, tan spice. Nice mouth feel with ample acidity to match the nice fruit-forward nature of this wine. This was tight and quiet, given the lack of air it had. Still, a high-quality wine and bottles in condition like this have 10+ years in front of it. 93+ — a year ago

Domaine & Selection

Meursault Chardonnay 2006

Straw gold color, bright in the glass. Very Coche-y with a match stick nose and notes of citrus, apricot, petrol, wet stone and tan spice. Great fruit and sneaky acidity in the mouth. Some vanilla creme and tropical fruit comes on with air. Not bad for the hot 06 vintage, I wonder if the 92 white burgs tasted like this at age 16? — a year ago
