Hilliard Bruce

Boundary Breaks Vineyard

Methode Champenoise Brut New York Sparkling Blend 2012

Nose has lemon juice/zest on sourdough bread, peeled green apple, sugar cubeb and lemon peel.

Palate has salted green apple slices, oxidized yellow apple, yellow cherry, minor oak notes and crusty bread.

Initially my prior notes assumed this might be Chardonnay based, but a few years on, I'm thinking no...my goal for this week is to get the actual blend out of Bruce Murray, and I'll report back.

This has a long window, future bottles can be 2028-2034. (Note to future self, move to cold cellar.)

Sky Pinot Noir 2015

Easily one of the better incarnations of this wine, the 2015 Sky is drinking really well. I think (but am not 100% certain) that by this vintage Greg Brewer had moved from Melville to John Hilliard’s operation just down the road on Route 246. Has many of the same characteristics you’d expect from a St Rita Hills pinot - beautiful bright strawberry-laced fruit, a bit of earth and spice, all wrapped together in a wine with a seamless mouthfeel. Very sad that life circumstances compelled John and his wife to shut HB down, but this wine is a terrific reflection of what they achieved in a very short space of time. Cheers! — 3 months ago

Two Shepherds

Saarloos Vineyard Grenache Blanc 2030

Every time I drink a Two Shepherds wine I wish I had more in my cellar. A true “Rhône ranger” producing some of the best rhône-style wines in California. We all need to drink more Two Shepherds and support innovative winemakers who think about product quality before profit and ratings. Thanks to my dear friend Bruce for introducing me to Two Shepherds and supplying me! — 25 days ago

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2017

Pale ruby color. Aromas of dusty cherry, raspberry and dried herbs. Gorgeous, complex, earthy, cherry and a beautiful finish. A Santa Cruz Mountain favorite. — 3 months ago

Cornerstone Cellars

Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

The inaugural vintage for cornerstone. Wine maker was Bruce Scotland. Two GI docs from Memphis got into the wine business. I bought this in 2001 at auction. To my surprise the wine is absolutely delicious. Not caught up in the high alcohol this wine is 13.5%. All mint, eucalyptus and tamed mountain tannin. — 3 months ago
