The hermit knew the best hill to make the best wines. — 5 years ago

Mango, peach, passion fruit. It is just so tropical and has a clean finish. You’d guess it’d be funkier but it’s just lovely. — 8 years ago
Review for "Lake House Red"
Woody, interesting aftertaste, very tasty. — 9 years ago
Fruity little number. 3 out of 10 on the thrush scale (10 being a certain chance of thrush). Might get this wee gay bastard again. — 11 years ago
This bottle of 2010 Roberto Voerzio “Brunate” was generously provided by a friend who wanted to share this with me after service along with a few others from Tasting Group. Opened, splash decanted and consumed over three hours; served side-by-side with the 2010 Pecchenino “Le Coste”. The Voerzio “Brunate” was a relative hermit. Even after three hours in the decanter, it remained a bit of a wallflower while the Pecchenino was a whirling dervish on the dance floor. The classic structure of 2010 and the austerity of “Brunate” made for an impenetrable fortress, keeping the fruit under lock and key…and behind a moat and a drawbridge and stone walls with soldiers and trebuchets for that matter. Despite all of that, one does get the sense there is a deep core of high quality fruit recessed underneath the surface. It’s dark and mysterious…and simply hard to access at this moment in time. For what it’s worth, Voerzio’s holdings in “Brunate” come from the western portion of the MGA, on the La Morra side, right next to Oddero’s holdings. Frankly, this is going to need a long, long time in the cellar before it shows really well. If i had any in my cellar, I wouldn’t touch again until 2030. — 3 years ago

Hands down, one of my new favorite sour session beers. Made in Brattleboro,VT. Hermit Thrush makes one mash and then uses that base (parti-gyle) for a few different beers, adding different ingredients or aging methods to get a few different finished brews. This is the base beer, the other versions are even cooler.
I'd love to be drinking this on a very hot, sunny day, alas it's mid-30°F here and rainy. It's very refreshing, light molasses in color, a touch over the sour threshold for many folks, perfect for me. 3.0% ABV — 8 years ago

Here's the story as presented, without any fact checking so I'm sure others will identify some mistakes... The winemaker was known as "the hermit of Lazio" as he went about making wines in his own way, built to age, and building up a vast library as he had little interest in selling his bottles. He made arrangements to sell his wine to a broker when his health was failing. The other act he took in the last months ahead of his death was to rip up all his vines because his daughter and heir married into a well known winemaking family that he didn't like and he couldn't face the prospect of them making his wine. This wine is a unicorn.
Earthy and slightly rustic, it retains red fruit qualities though rose, tar and tobacco dominate. It is an interesting wine with a fascinating story.
Found on the Maialino wine list, which is filled with gems from the reference points to the obscure.

Grappa from The Hermit! Been waiting years to buy or taste. Exceptional. Usually don't love Barrique aged grappa but it was delicately integrated. — 11 years ago
