The Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District resulted from a flood in 1876 when the Ngaruroro River changed its course and a vista of gravel was left behind. The area is a place of warmth, stone and sandy alluvial soils. This unique combination alongside other climatic factors such as sunshine hours, humidity and rainfall means the gravels retain heat and lead to optimum ripening for Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet. The stylistic characters of red wines from the vineyard are richness, ripeness and elegance with a distinctive fine dusty tannin finish. Chardonnay is also grown on the vineyard with distinctive floral notes and pronounced minerality on the palate.

L'Eritage Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2018

Intense bouquet! Attar of roses, nutmeg on the nose. Blackberries on the front. Mineral tannins with a lot high notes on the top of the palate. With a hint of mint? Soft tannins on the back of the mouth. — 7 months ago

Ruhanui Gimblett Gravels Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

What I’m having is actually a new wine from them so may be first to review it, but they did a sulphite free merlot. It’s actually quite banging, has a real pointed red fruit chassis with those silky, sultry tannins and texture you want in merlot. It is electrically vibrant, and not at all a bad time for a solo camper — 7 months ago

Te Kahu Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Merlot Blend 2017

NZ is not just for Pinot and SB. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Typical bdx style black currant and cherry with a minty note and under lying minerality. — 7 months ago

Les Beaux Cailloux Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

2017 tasted 2020. Bananas and wildflowers on the nose! The scent is almost oily. Malolactic fermentation gives it a silky tannic feel on the top of the mouth. Slight hint of bananas and chalk on the end. A surprising long finish. Very nice. I’m a confirmed Chard hater, but this causes me to reconsider my prejudices. — 7 months ago
