Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

Lyle Fass
9.4

Elena destroyed 2016 and left achingly beautiful Nebbiolo in her wake. What a wine. Such clarity and definition. Strawberry, big ripe mid season cherries, a hint of tar, even some cherry compote but it’s all buttressed by startling minerality. So many fresh roses. Dazzling aromas. Compact and vivid aromas. Almost in 3D. So fine. Palate is just wonderful. Amazingly fine grained tannins that are just so silky, so sweet and so perfect. This is delicacy and elegance exemplified. Perfect balance of sweet fruit, elegant tannins and great freshness. What a wonderful wine. 16 hits keep on coming. Nose gets wonderful herbals as it airs. Big structure ensures a long life. Very pure and very sappy. Such length. The nose smells like the elite burgundy people fight for allocations over. What concentration and density. Brilliant wine. Has decades to go. Outrageous explosive sweet cherry fruit here. So close to a 9.5. Maybe air will push it over the line. — 4 months ago

I’ve been so excited to taste this and wow oh wow is this one of the best 16’s so far. Insane. Deep, penetrating, layered nose of dark ripe cherries, unreal dried and fresh roses and so much more. The smells are so profound here. On pop and pour. Raspberry. So so fresh and so much fruit. But so pure and bursting out of the glass. This is so legit. 9.8 nose. This is rare air. Sick. Sick. Sick. Wow, what a palate. Just an amalgam of sweet fruit. The most vivid, detailed black cherries one can imagine. Just bursting with intensity and purity. Man is this clean and compact. Nose is getting herbal and tarry with air. Sick complexity. Silky, sweet, ripe and intense tannins that are delicate and super suave. This is a baby but has unlimited potential. Supernatural balance and freshness here. Wow. — 4 months ago

Now onto the 19 which is a superstar vintage in Piedmont. Wow this nose is outstanding. Super deep and pure violets. What clarity. Stunning. 9.4 nose. Just sick. Unreal clarity of fruit. So vivid. Like one has 20/10 smell! Earthy and crushed stones and outrageous blackberry fruit. Palate is more backwards than the 18. It is tight but focused like a laser. Huge structure and much room for development. Unreal concentration and complexity. So so good. This is even more focused than the 18. Awesome blackberry fruit. Really really mineral on the finish. Great linearity and energy here. — 4 months ago

What a color. Nose of deep spice and macerated cherries. Florals as well. So so aromatic. She’s got the touch. Licorice and such deep penetrating cherry aromas. Palate is ripe and medium bodied with terrific purity and energy. Sappy and stunningly compact. This is a great Langhe Neb. Some herbals and leather on the nose as it aerates. Dynamite fruit. Clear and very present. Such a pretty wine. Strawberry preserves develop on the nose as well with air and terrific grip and persistence on the palate. Very very good. After more the nose is just awesome strawberry, herbs and cherries. Palate is so complete and loose but focused. Juicy and long. Textbook Langhe Nebbiolo — 4 months ago

Piedmont meets Pomerol. What a nose. Epic. This is epic a f. Plums, spice, minerals and earth. Perfumed, deep and penetrating. Just amazing. This is elite. Blind you think 2nd tier Pomerol. Has that raspberry spice cake thing in elite Pomerol. Cuban pipe tobacco. Wow. Did not expect this. So bright. So lifted. This is the best Piedmontese Bordeaux blend nose I’ve ever smelled. Sorry Darmagi. Huge concentration and depth. Big plummy and ripe fruit and mouth coating tannins. So long. Exquisite structure and velvety sweet tannins. Black plum and black cherry fruit. Long and structured. Really long. — 4 months ago
