Château Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

My epiphany wine and always beautiful. However tonight, poured side by side with the Chappellet 69, GDL 70 and 72 Martha’s it was outclassed. — 3 years ago

Domaine du Closel-Château des Vaults

La Jalousie Savennières Chenin Blanc 2014

Another stellar vintage from La Jalousie. I find it hard to ignore my bias towards this producer when I taste another one of their wines- this was my epiphany in Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. But all the same intensity and elegance is there once again. Pithy, taught, vibrant and pure. I’m getting more citrus, herbs and minerality at this stage, and just a hint of floral nuance. The weight of the mid palate is always one of the highlights of this cuvée- dense and generous but always supple and kinetic. This is a wine that seems to burst upon impact but then moves around the palate with such finesse. Tremendous value from one of the finest estates in Anjou. — 3 years ago

Syrah - Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rhone Blend 2017

Very jammy and velvety. Full bodied but still has some subtlety. — 6 months ago

Pinot Noir 2008

Epiphany wine! I've had younger Gantenbein and not been impressed. I assume this is what excellent and aged 1er and G.C. burgundy is like. Silky and spicy with hints of tobacco without a hint of tannin. — a year ago

Vincent Dauvissat

La Forest Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2011

I’m in heaven ... chalk, crushed rocks, very mineral nose. Butman what a palate !! Lemon and white flowers with a liquorish/sugary touch at first. Then it expands on the width with a velvety texture which is odd for a white. Butter in here too . Long acid backbone with a finish that lingers with white flowers. An epiphany when it comes to Chablis. Re contextualising everything I have ever tasted there. — 3 years ago

Jade Mountain

Caldwell Vineyard Merlot

Amazing. An epiphany. Menthol, lavender, red and purple fruits. Fragrant and elegant, but with a core of new world fruit. Resolved sweet tannins. Long finish. Spectacular — 3 years ago

Cloudy Bay

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Cloudy Bay’s 33rd vintage. I’ve been a fan since their 12th. In fact, their 1996 was my epiphany wine; it was THE bottle that started it all. Founded in 1985 by David Hohnen of Margaret River’s Cape Mentelle along with its first winemaker, Kevin Judd, who would go on to spend 25 years there before creating his own label, Greywacke. Judd is widely considered as the pioneer responsible for elevating New Zealand wine to its current status. Judd also happens to be one of the best wine photographers in the world (I highly recommend his ‘The Landscape of New Zealand Wine’). Cloudy Bay was acquired by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy) in 2003. Production of the 2017 vintage was down due to Cyclone Debbie. All fruit that was not harvested prior to the storm was discarded. Lime oil and white grapefruit combine with lemongrass and apricot, and will have you bracing for a razor sharp acidity to come, but what follows is superb balance. There’s a ping of acidity that’s just enough, which allows the flavors to linger just a little longer than usual. Still a fan. — 3 years ago
