Salt River Sauvignon Blanc 2020

My first time trying one of Duncan Savage’s wines, despite owning a few cases of his reds, and ironically a wine that’s brand new in his portfolio. Sauvignon Blanc is a grape I have a hard time loving, so I seldom drink it. But this, from a 32 year old Stellenbosch vineyard recently acquired by Savage, was a fine example of the grape.

Still showing signs of reduction, with plenty of cut grass, unripe gooseberry and tomato vine on the nose, but it possesses a gorgeous palate that seemed much more awake and replete with plenty of ripe apple and juicy key lime flavours. This is good, ageworthy Sauvignon from South Africa, and I’m glad I bought a few bottles.

Red Willow Vineyard Blanc Franc 2018

Pale yellow white, excellent clarity. Citrus and herbs in the nose, lime, lemon and white pepper in the mouth. Tangy, dry, tasty. Cabernet franc is a great varietal for WA state, however you make your wine from it — 7 days ago

Oak Ridge Vineyard Gewürztraminer 2018

Ok, first off this is the Gewürtztraminer Orange, or an orange wine version with lots of skin contact in the making. Second, it’s on the old side with lots of sediment on the bottom. That said, let’s dance: brownish orange hue, very good clarity but with sediment (yeast, lees, funk we should not dwell on as we partake). Some floral and spice notes in nose, faintly. Dry, lots of skin tannins albeit mellowed, spice, GT fruit and good acidity in mouth. Probably past its peak but still drinkable. Room temp preferred. Hope the winemaker keeps making this one. Also pairs well with a revisit to the original 1998 anime version of Cowboy Bebop. — 9 days ago

Dineen Vineyard Côt 2018

Dense purple red color, highly extracted pigment. Raspberry, blackberry aromas, flavors, black pepper and seed tannin finish. Great length of fruit, lovely style of Malbec, whole cluster, native yeast. Fun stuff — 12 days ago

Underwood Mountain Vineyards Grüner Veltliner 2019

Pale yellow white, excellent clarity. Dill and citrus in nose, lime white pepper and dill in mouth, as the label promises. Honey? Maybe. Dryish, crisp, some lactic and skin astringency on finish. Nice character, attention to craft here — a day ago

Savage Grace

Red Willow Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2019

New vintage for me. Pale white, excellent clarity. Notes of hay and citrus with a hint of peach in nose. Flavors of grapefruit and lemon, as stated on label; hint of apple, real length of fruit on the lemon. Nice acidity, slightly drying on palate from acid and skin astringency. Really good food wine here, I would think — 10 days ago
