Distinctly old school nose. Described by the brewery/distillery rep as "chateau floors" as in polished with wax and honey.
Deep earthy, bass notes of the soil seem to echo in this now 40 year old Calvados.

This might be my favorite Speyside. Very pleasant nose with complex, deep flavors. Well balanced and smooth. — 6 years ago

The Balvenie Distillery

DoubleWood 17 Years Single Malt Scotch Whisky

This scotch opens up with sweet dried fruit aromas. Really smooth and coats the whole mouth as is being drunk. Deep vanilla notes, the wood is much more subtle in this expression of balviene. Thoroughly enjoyable — 7 years ago

Macallan Distillery

SMWS Character and Grace 12 Years Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Hard to believe these two whisky’s are both Macallan 12 with almost the same ABV (63.6 vs 63.4). This has a lot more color and it shows up in the flavor. On the nose you get a deep, dark sugar which carried over onto the full flavor upon tasting. The finish lasts forever and unlike the Albino Rhino version it is full mouth filling. Almost an after dinner drink. Super happy I had this one after the Rhino since that would have been rated even lower. — 2 years ago

Did a monthly Scotch remote tasting seminar that I got behind on plus I’m trying to learn about sake so I’m all over the map these days. Happy that Delectable has widened its aperture.

Highland Park Distillery

The Dark 17 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

I Forgot I still had this at the warehouse, well I had some leftover before tonight at least. Even better now with air in the bottle for a couple years.

The Dark is an award-winning 17-year-old single malt Scotch whisky that has been matured in first-fill European oak sherry seasoned casks, delivering a distinctly deep flavor, packed with ripe cherries, toasted almonds, and dark chocolate overlaid with hints of smoky peat.

Rowan's Creek Distillery

Straight Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey

Deep notes of rich, golden honeycomb, espresso, and cocoa. This was one of the very first bourbons I ever purchased, and here we are several years (and multiple bottles) later and I’m still keeping their stuff in my liquor inventory because it’s just that delicious, especially for the price point. — 6 years ago

Stitzel-Weller Distillery

Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Color is quite deep, like concentrated black tea. Nose is powerful, oily, crayon, aldehyde, spicy, apple cider, and a bit oak. Taste is spicy, minty, oaky, zesty, and drier than I pictured in the first sip. Ginger and more zest in the following sips. Still quite dry until finally caramel like sweetness comes out. Powerful and Anot for faint heart. — 7 years ago

Woodford Reserve Distillery

Labrot & Graham Double Oaked Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Deep amber color shows her double oak nature. Nose of fragrant ester, green apple, oak, and hint of toffee. Very powerful nose. Taste is a dance of hot spice with creamy caramel, around this is some milky vanilla, apple, and chocolate note. Aftertaste is a pleasure with milk chocolate-like sweetness, a bit minty, dried figs, and powerful hot spice at the throats. This is a bold but well polished whiskey. — 9 years ago

Kirin Distillery Co

Fuji-Sanroku 50° Blend Whisky

A well made clean and flavoursome Japanese whisky coming in at 50%ABV. An interesting story about the source of the water for the distillery which is near Mt Fuji. The purity of the water is always a key issue in the making of quality whisky. As the story goes the water used at Fuji Gotemba distillery is taken from 3 underground bores that tap into underground streams which are 100 metres deep. Analysis has shown that the water used today fell on Mt. Fuji as snow 50 years ago. — 5 years ago

Aberlour Distillery

16 Years Old Double Cask Matured Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Deep amber color showing her double cask feature. Nose of sweet apple cider, ester, a bit oak and cedar, smooth, and warm. Taste of nice peaty note, with spice coming next. Dried fruit like figs shows up deep on the rim and back of the tongue. Toffee and brown sugar like scarf wrap the tongue with softness. Aftertaste of dried fruit and baked apple. A 16 year old with smoothness and complexity of > 20 year old. — 9 years ago
