Carelle Sous La Chapelle Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2023

Lyle Fass
9.5

I adore this site. The texture is always on point. Restrained opulence is the calling card here. Nose is super complex and stoney out of the gates. Really a mess of limestone and some fresh hermes Then the intense ripe cherry leaks through. Black cherry, red cherry, sour cherry all at once. Nuclear levels of spice, stone and even some mulberry. Superb balance and energy with compelling sweetness and stoniness. Lush, plush texture that will get even more lush and plus with air. Very seductive. Oh man the tiny berry fruit intensity is off the charts. Juicy and so sweet but backed up by insane energy and stoniness. Opening by the minute. Terrific inner mouth aromas and just amazing velvety tannins. 9.5 for now but let’s see the go higher with air. — 2 months ago

Drank this side by side with the 2015 Vintage. Amazing to see how great the vintage variation is. Both excellent wine, but completely different. — 7 years ago

This may be my favorite of the trio of Paul Pernot burgundies that I have been enjoying. Drinking so well right now for such a youngster. Th cinnamon jolly rancher just kicked in. Wow this is so good. — 8 years ago

Les Carelles Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2020

The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Carelle sous la Chapelle is fairly muted. Two hours in the decanter help unwind a restrained bouquet of rose pedals, violets, red and black cherry, cranberry, wood smoke and hints of iodine. Just a notch below full-bodied, the wine is tightly structured and embodies an underlying strength, which undoubtedly will be unleashed after a few years of bottle aging. I wouldn't dare touching this for at least 10 more years. Drink from 2030 until 2050. — 3 years ago

Let's go Chiefs! Decanted for a hour. Lush dark fruit, earthy, and subtle charcoal notes. Needs a solid decant or more time before drinking. — 5 years ago
