Contacto Monção & Melgaço Alvarinho 2023

Exclusively from their vineyards in the northern part of Vinho Verde, Monção and Melgaço. I’ve been there! That’s where I accidentally got up two hours early cause my clock switched to Spain time and I thought that meant I'dn need to get up an hour early. Contacto has a little more skin contact than average, turning up with a slight texture and friendly bitter bite. On the nose, it’s fresh lemon zest, wet stone and whetstone, with a bit of white flower. The palate is utterly thirst-quenching, veering into dried apricot territory and a bit of (as I said above) fun bitterness countering the fruit. It all wraps up with a sluice of salinity. Fun, fun, fun! — 3 months ago

Sorgente Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Another new Brunello producer I’ve wanted to try. Definitely a very nice wine. Especially given 2016, a bit surprised to see this clock in at 15%, and it does show a bit on the palate. But the aromas and fruit expression are really fantastic. Nice wine with a variety of foods at Boccon di Vino just outside of Montalcino - really worth a visit for the view alone. — 2 years ago

Le Concis du Champs Chassagne-Montrachet Chardonnay 2018

Wha wha weeee waaah. Teleportation straight back to burgundy - escargot under the clock tower, lunch on a bike ride of the country. Beast. Doesn’t get much better. — 3 years ago

Domaine Coche-Dury (J.F. Coche Dury)

Meursault Chardonnay 2004

Served blind. I nailed the vintage, even a broken clock is right twice a day. A spectacular nose of smoke, flowers and a dose of reduction. In the mouth, intensity and freshness . Minerals & green fruit that reminded me of Chablis to start but no way given the weightlessness. Waves of crisp fruit with exceptional balance. Most producers would be happy to make a premiere cru or grand cru of this quality. It might be an overused descriptor or cliché, but this was all about pureness. According to my friend purchased on release, and locked away. A reminder of how important proper storage is. — 3 months ago

Clos du Val Wine Co.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1975

Classic Napa cab from the mid 70s. Surprisingly fresh despite its age. Doubtful any current Napa cabs would last 45+ years (or clock in at 12.5% abv) — 3 years ago
