Cor Leonis Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Shay A

Finally getting around to posting wines from my annual Napa trip from two weeks ago. Always goes by quick! Lots of fun new stops this year.

It was my first time trying Moone-Tsai wines aside from their widely distributed Napa Valley Cab, so some of these were totally brand new to me. Melka is the winemaker.

Much more rich and dark fruited compared to the Howell Mountain. This is a blend of vineyards from Pritchard Hill, Caldwell (Coombsville) and St Helena. Very Pritchard Hill like on the nose with herbal crunch, savory graphite and cassis, oozing blackberries and cherry liqueur. Once on the palate, it channels its Coombsville fruit displaying a touch of licorice, candied blue and black fruits, baking spices and espresso. Big, but slightly more approachable than the Howell.

Caldwell Vineyard Syrah 2006

Had very low expectations after the last bottle had a dried out fork but this was a beautiful wine still holding its structure, tannins, and loads of fruit. Very well balanced and stood up to a hearty meal. — 6 months ago

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2017

One of my favorite Chardonnays! Light in body but tastes like it goes through malolactic fermentation giving it a little bit of butter flavor. So well balanced in acidity. Not too bold, not too light. Just beautiful! — a year ago

Black List XX Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Black List XX .... doesn't get much better than this! Age worthy for sure, but a solid decant paired with a nice steak will certainly do the trick. 100% Cab from Caldwell Vineyard "Block 15", and Pritchard Hill. — a year ago

Black List XVIII Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

100% Cabernet Sauvignon primarily sourced from Caldwell Block 16 in Coombsville, St. Helena, and Soda Canyon. Aged 22 months in 85% New French Oak. Super velvety, thick, blackberry, black cherries, blueberry jam notes, vanilla, hint of spice, and a long finish. One of my favorite Black Lists by far. — 2 years ago

Joy Napa Valley Syrah Rosé 2017

A beautiful deep rose color. Amazing nose. A rose that was oaked, produced a very creamy mouth feel. Cranberry, tart finish. A real nice Rose. — 2 years ago

Farella Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Shay A

So much more sweet fruited on the nose than the Caldwell. Partially due to age. Little bit of toasted oak with blackberries and cassis on the nose. Licorice, ripe raspberries and clove on the finish. Very Farella-like, as it should be. Years ahead of it. Nice pull @Mark Flesher . — 3 years ago

Lots of chocolate, lots of blackberries. Herbal. Tannic. Massive. This is a wine that I can understand the 89.4 average, because the wine is just simply not in a place to rate right now. However, the structure on the front and middle of this wine is unmistakable. This one will settle well in the next 2-3 years. This is not a 2016-2021 wine. This is a 2021-2025 wine. The problem is that this is my last one.
