Cain Five and Waygu strip steak(from Snake River Farms) zoom tasting with Chris Howell(owner of Cain) and Chef Hiro Sone (owner/chef of the former Terra in St. Helena). 2008 vintage and 2013 vintage.
Prior notes apply for the 2008 vintage.
2013 vintage: 1 hour decant (some cloudy sediment). A dark garnet color with a little bricking. On the nose: certain vintages of Cain embrace the Brett on the property, and this is one of em. Some funky barnyard (luv it), plum, pine, tobacco, smoked meat, forest floor, orange peel. Taste: smooth medium plus body wine with plum, pine, currant, coffee, and a bitter chocolate dry medium plus finish. Some tannins still kicking wanting a few more years in the bottle. — 4 years ago
Nice dark color, full body, character consistent with story, with smoky notes. Definite repurchase at under $20. — 5 months ago
Completely enjoyable but this has peaked and receded. Great year and my only regret is saving it. Would have been better to plunge in and burn through asap. Now it’s still very up front but it’s a bit more astringent. The alcohol seems more pronounced. Not to say it was a chore to drink by any stretch. This is still an enjoyable bottle but I compare it to what it was and it is less but overall it’s still an enjoyable wine. — 3 years ago
Rich stone fruits and Meyer lemon — 7 months ago
Red transparant.
Right after opening it showed very little strength. Muted, some wood and wet forrest.
But today on day two it did a full 180.
Great combination of dark ripe fruit, candied red and pepper. Also some burn of the 14,5%…
Personally I like it a bit younger but once you treat it like they tell you at Chateau Musar (old wines decant and open long before drinking) it is very enjoyable. — 2 years ago
