Carpineto

Riserva Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese 2016

Dark ruby color that lightens slightly on the rim. Heady aromas of dark cherry, violets, dried herbs and balsam wood. Tertiary flavors of earth and tobacco are on the front of the pallet with some dark cherry in the background. Lots of acidity. — 2 years ago

Fabius Sant' Antimo Syrah 2017

Delectable Wine
8.9

The 2017 Fabius shows dark florals and balsam herbs, giving way to crushed ashen stone and hints of damp earth. Here I’m finding velvety textures and fleshy black fruits energized by bright acidity that give way to a staining of minerals and spice. This tapers off lightly structured with remnants of plum and hints of tobacco. It’s a balanced and pleasurable expression of Syrah from Montalcino that refines for six to eight months in a mix of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th-pass barriques. (Eric Guido, Vinous, January 2022)

Poggio Antico

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2017

Deeeelicious, especially after a tomato based Amatriciana! Reticent at first, mostly growling maelstrom of tannin and acid, but with tomatoes and protein, chocolate, herbs, unquenchable, perfect.
Balsam, chocolate, herbs, a trip to Tuscany. So nice. Food wine.

Canalicchio di Sopra

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2018

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino captivates with its wild floral perfumes, balsam herbal tones and vivid black cherry fruit. This is pure and lifted, but almost fleeting in feel, revealing its saline minerals up front before giving way to notes of young strawberry and inner rose. Only a hint of fine tannin remains, as a pleasant flourish of inner sweetness tapers off to nuances of pomegranate. The 2018 is ready to please today, and probably has another three to possibly five years of pleasurable drinking in front of it. (Eric Guido, Vinous, October 2022)

Cardwell Hill Cellars

Reserve Estate Bottled Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2018

Clear dark ruby. Inviting nose of black cherry and cranberry. Medium full palate echoes the nose adding red apple peel and on the finish, a hint of vanilla and a touch of balsam. Medium tannins that assert on the finish as well. Mouthwatering medium plus acidity wraps it all up. A classic Willamette PN blending New World fruit with Old World style and structure. A universal red that’s ready for nearly any cuisine. Drink now through 2028 with some minor development. — 2 years ago

Viña Bosconia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2006

Always amazing.
N: Tar, Cherries, smoky rubber, forest, balsam, chocolate , dirt, spice( cinnamon).
P: Vegetal wrapped in luscious roundness, if I were schooled in burgs, I’m sure I could find comparable.
Such a delightful mouthfeel, lush, acidic, tannic all in harmony. Resinous pine.
One of the very faves.
We once counted the fonts on a LdH bottle, got 12…any significance?

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2020

Delectable Wine
8.9

The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino takes its time opening in the glass, yet is worth the wait, as a smoky mix of balsam, rosemary, crushed rocks, dried black cherries and mint nuances form its dark bouquet. This is soft in texture and savory within, with brisk acids maintaining a lovely balance and pretty nuances of strawberry and spice that fill the senses. The 2020 tapers off with subtle tannins and medium length as rosy florals slowly fade. (Eric Guido, Vinous, October 2022)

Palazzo della Torre Veronese Corvina Blend 2018

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2018 Palazzo della Torre comes to life in the glass with a vibrant mix of balsam herbs, black cherries and cloves. It’s cool-toned in feel, yet silky and stacked with dark fruits and exotic spices. A tantalizing mix of zesty acids and minerals keeps the energy high, as the 2018 tapers off potent yet completely balanced and fresh. The Palazzo della Torre is fantastic, especially at this price point. After tasting the 2017 last year, I was a little worried about a stylistic change, but talk about making a comeback. This is a mix of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella and Sangiovese, where a small portion of the grapes are left to raisin for three months prior to vinification.
