Azelia

Barolo Nebbiolo 2003

Nose full of tar and ripe plum, veering to prune. Took an hour in the decanter to sort itself but then wonderfully balanced and layered. Black tea, darker plum, perfectly drying tannins to match the perfect, fatty short rib. I would drink up lest the drying tannins persist more as the fruit wanes. — 3 days ago

Azelia

Vigneto Punta Barbera d'Alba 1997

constantly underestimated grape - here presented in perfect condition and showing culinary herbs, ridden saddle leather, autumn foliage and some fruital hints.
a quite adorable old lady!
certainly on a range with a. oberto, braida and vietti's barbera treatment skills, highlighted here the ability to age this low in tannin grape...

The aroma is similar to Azelia, authentic and pure, but missing some bass components. It even shows some natural wine tendencies, slightly volatile and gassy, which settles down quickly. The structure lacks the authority and the weight but it scores high in transparency and dynamics. It will not challenge the supremacy of Conternos, Mascarellos and Odderos because its aroma is less complex and powerful, but its structure is built on radically different geometry, which makes it very exciting. There is also a Burgundian sense of mastery of texture, and distinctiveness of aroma that separates it from more pedestrian Barolo’s. Also worth noting that while it shows the authentic character of Barolo it does not forego a strong individuality of the winemaker. — 6 months ago

Bricco Fiasco Barolo Nebbiolo 2001

Astounding nose full of tar and rose water, needed an hour to come out and play. Palate full of old cherry and leathery, earthy dark red fruit, dried mushroom. Mellowed completely by age with melted tannins and the sense of bricked spicy fruit around the edges. Just lovely, with enough acidity left to keep it all together. Was really singing at room temp. — a month ago

Paolo Scavino

Bric dël Fiasc Barolo Nebbiolo 1999

Fascinating to drink next to its Azelia vintage vineyard-mate, the Scavino was shy on the nose even after an hour. Some tar, sour cherry came through, and preceded a deeply powerful core of black tea, loamy dark cherry and Grand Cru Burgundy essence of vinous power. 45 second length, not a hard edge to be found...this may last years but can’t imagine how it will improve. Phenomenal. — 3 years ago
