Zinfandel

Robert Biale Vineyard

Black Chicken Napa Valley Zinfandel 2004

Nose has cherry liqueur, blackberry liqueur damp-dried leaves, forest moss, fresh ground French roast coffee beans and crushed fresh blackberries.

Palate has ripe black cherry, blackberry compote, chocolate brownie corner, wet leather with mild tannins and dry earth on a long finish.

Decanted 60m at time of notes, but continuing to unfold in the Gabriel-Glas.

The oldest vintage of Black Chicken in our cellar; acquired from the winery in April 2006. A good wine to pair with making a massive batch of BBQ sauce today for canning, something to sip while the aroma penetrates our house (usually lasts 2-3D šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø) but we'll happily be enjoying sauce well into 2023.
(Biale is performing better then a 2004 Rosenblum opened alongside today.)

Klinker Brick

Old Vine Lodi Zinfandel 2018

While I can't quite meet the WE critic who gave this wine 92 points, I definitely agree that is "liberally spiced with oak." In fact, when I first opened the bottle, all I got was this liberal spice, and even more heat (15.4% ABV)! The pepper and alcohol overpowered everything. Then tonight I revisited it and I'm glad I did. The wine had mellowed the eff out, revealing beautiful cherry and strawberry fruit flavors, along with cinnamon, chocolate and sweet pipe tobacco. 100% Zinfandel. 9/7/22. ā€” a month ago

Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend 2018

For a Ridge Zin, this strikes me as a big boy. Rich nose has intense, rich, spicy blackberry fruit, accented with a little pungent American oak, and a nice dry gravel note underneath. Expansive in the mouth, the fruit is rich and concentrated, but avoids jamminess, and the palate also features a characteristic brambly component. Finishes dry and clingy, with tactile tannins (soft) coating the mouth. Iā€™m having it with pasta, but this wine is built for a grilled porterhouse. ā€” 2 days ago
