Dinner at De Wijnhuis in downtown Stellenbosch. Great food and amazing wine list. Was shocked to see some older wines, very unusual in South Africa. Highly recommend.
Medium mix of ruby and garnet red. Ripe and plush nose with layers of sweet spices, black currants, cassis, plums and a touch of red earthiness. Fully integrated tannins (5.5/10) with a medium body. Good structure on the palate with some cedar, black currants, sweet tobacco and light dustiness. Great acidity with a lingering finish. Drink now. — 3 years ago
62nd birthday-oh boy! The 07 Classico is so velvety, well integrated tannins and alcohol with a hint of dried figs, plums, and long finish. Great way to celebrate with my hubby! I will save the Riserva for another occasion with my sons and daughter in-law! — 4 days ago
Cinquiemes Cru, Fifth growth Margaux very supple and approachable. I always pick a wine with the Chateau depicted on the label. Shows they are proud. Sir Winston Pub, Lille, France — 3 years ago
Orange New Orleans baccahnal, funky but really smooth. Drinking straight with no food and it’s really good — 9 days ago
I did not get to write notes on the last three wines, just scores. We had to get to Russell Hamilton.
However, I wish I had been able to write them as these were the wines I was looking forward to spending some time on.
Peter & Andrew Allan of Crystallum are the third generation of winemakers and sons of the man who pioneered Pinot Noir winemaking in the Hemel-en-Aarde which; is what drew me to the region that is about another hour plus SE of Stellenbosch and a very good area to produce Pinot Noir.
