Château Rayas

Chateau de Fonsalette Réservé Côtes du Rhône Syrah 2008

A complete smoke show and unanimously the star of the flight. It’s no wonder the demand for these wines have skyrocketed. They are singular expressions with unmatched purity and character. The visual, nose and palate effortlessly command attention. Aromas and flavors unique from anything else in the Southern Rhône. The experience is a bit like going to a Billie Eilish concert with only basic knowledge of her music or persona, only to leave in awe because you just witnessed a once in a generation talent doing something undeniably special. Like Billie, a wine of character, authenticity and showmanship. — 14 days ago

Wish I could still find these occasionally. Wife and I had the ‘83 on our first date in 1987 (when stores still got access to them). So it’s a sentimental favorite ! And I agree with your assessment of this estate.

@Tom Casagrande for real. It’s all basically unobtainium unless you’re there

Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend

Part of a CDP tasting with Rayas and Tardieu-Laurent. Most fruit forward of the group. A nice wine but 3rd of 3 — 6 months ago

Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache Blend 2009

Lunch in Alsace. The 2009 Château Rayas reminds me of the legendary 1990. Although the high alcohol is apparent, the wine is in complete harmony. Medium garnet colored, the nose exhibits a wide array of dried herbs, ripe, almost jammy strawberries and raspberries, red currant, red cherries, iodine, savory notes and earth. On the palate, the high level of concentration is head spinning, but there is just enough acidity to keep everything balanced. The 2009 Château Rayas will evolve gracefully for two or more decades and ranks among the finest vintages of this estate. — 14 days ago

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2016

One glass and I did not open the whole bottle. Still I am not disappointed. So far one of the best Chateauneuf-du-pape I had except for Rayas. I am wondering how it wilm evolve. Sor far we have dark fruits, a bit of spices and quite à long finish. I am also surprised that such a wine is pretty much unknown. — 6 months ago

Arioso Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2011

Outside of the Rayas family wines, my favorite CDP. A wonderful almost Smokey bouquet covers the brightness of granache fruit and Gus it great balance. Earthier than most cdp. Not overly sweet. A pleasure. — 8 months ago

Bodega Cuatro Rayas

61 Dorado en Rama Rueda Palomino Fino Verdejo

Reminiscent of an Amontillado. Nutty nose (walnut skin, hazelnuts), orange rind and caramel, raisins. Rounder, softer, more fruit on the palate than in an Amontillado. Good length. Hazelnuts — 14 days ago

Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend

A tasting of magnificent CdPs. The ‘03 Rayas was sublime. Drinking a garden with a peppery, smoky nose. Just magnificent. Tasted with a ‘07 Tardieu-Laurent which was beautifully balanced. Fuller than the Rayas, with more of the typical CDP nose. Perfect time for the ‘07. The third wine was the ‘07 Vieux Donjon. The most typical of the granache fruit forward CDP. A bit too much fruit for me. Lacked the balance of the T-L. In the end, nothing compares to the Rayas. An exquisite wine of all time. — 6 months ago

Château des Tours

Vacqueyras Red Rhône Blend 2006

A little over 5 years since my last btl. Not quite the flamboyant perfumed, Rayas-like nose that I remember this as having, but a more elegant refined version: sandalwood, dried mint leaf, rasperry, incense. On the palate: very good acidity, bitter medicinal herbs, good density, black cherry, very soft tannin on the finish. Wow, definitely mature, but still stunning. — 10 months ago
