L'or D'eugene Brut Blanc de Noirs

David T
9.3

This is excellent at most N/V price points, even better at just under $40.

The first thing you notice is it’s weightiness from 80% Pinot Meunier & 20% Pinot Noir.

Nice, bright, ripe fruits of; green apple, lime zest, Meyer lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, mix of mid & dark berries, cream, caramel, notes of melted, brown sugar, grippy chalk & grey volcanics, limestone, yeast, baguette crust, spring flowers, very lively acidity, great length, freakish balanced and smartly polished finished

Love this champagne. Really cool to have perpetual reserve made meunier.

Cuvée de Réserve Blanc de Noirs Champagne Pinot Noir

A smaller, independent house located in the Côte des Bar, the majority of Gallimard’s vineyard holdings are planted to Pinot Noir with a little but of Chardonnay. This particular designation, their Blanc de Noir presents as a light copper, salmon color; it’s actually quite striking. I had to wonder if there was some skin contact and come to find out, they slightly macerate the grapes in the press…so there you have it. The nose is quite pretty with strawberry and white peach. The palate is quite round and well endowed with white peach; typical of wines from this most southern part of Champagne. That being said, there is a freshness here that I found rather compelling thanks to a lovely spine of acid. The finish provides saline minerals which I found rather endearing. No disgorgment data was obvious on the bottle, which, anymore these days is sort of a bummer. I think all producers should state at least some basic info on the labels of their NV wines. But I digress. This was an easy Champagne to like and definitely something I would drink again — 13 days ago

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2004

Pop and 1.5 hrs slow ox. My initial read on this was that it was slightly faded, but I think that might just be a stylistic choice. Lovely bright nose, with good lemon and apple, but surprisingly light in style and surprisingly soft for a Corton Charlemagne. On the palate: fresh, with good acidity. Again, surprisingly soft. Maybe more Pernand-Vergelesses 1er than CC in my book. Ok. — 14 days ago

Les Vignes de Mon Village Blanc de Meuniers Champagne Pinot Meunier

Somewhat of an outlier in the world of serious Champagne, Moussé Fils predominately works with Pinot Meunier which makes up the overwhelming majority of their holdings. This example, “Les Vignes de Mon Village” happens to be 100% Pinot Meunier from Cuisles bottled with zero dosage and fermented in stainless steel (as is most of their wines). One other rather interesting aspect of this particular designation is that it’s bottled and aged with a cork enclosure, as opposed to a crown cap. In the glass, it presents as a pail straw color with a persistent mousse. The nose displayed pink apple, squished raspberries, red flowers and an autolytic note that reminded me of wet chalk. On the palate, lemons, pears, strawberry, chalk and…on the finish, which is quite long and very dry, there’s lime. Fabulous acid. A lovely Champagne. Moussé Fils is a producer that should be on everyone’s radar. Disgorged January 31, 2018. — 15 days ago

Charmes Meursault 1er Cru Chardonnay 2016

Superbe Meursault Charmes, très typé avec des saveurs de fruits blancs, touche mielleuse mais à peine, riche et plein, frais et éclatant en même temps, bel équilibre. 91-92

Nice typical Meursault with white fruit, touch of honey and butter yet clean and precise, fresh and energetic, rich and full, great balance.

'Special Club' Les Fortes de Terres Brut 2015

Well they’ve done it again. Who is they? Why Cédric Moussé and the Club Trésors de Champagne of course. Another superstar bottle from them.

A muted pale lemon color with an effusive stream of tiny bubbles. Aromas of honeyed almonds, peaches, and crushed herbs. Fresh cherries and apricots sparkle here. Toasty brioche bread and chalky minerality show after some time with green apples being quite dominant after receiving some air.

The Master of Meunier and here it shows. 100% Pinot Meunier from the village of Cuisles located in the Vallee de la Marne. This Special Club offering is from one plot of land, giving it its name, Les Fortes Terres. Disgorged on 10/21/19 with a dosage of 1 g/l, this is refreshingly stark with beautifully racy acidity.

Full bodied and bold on palate, the complexity and purity of the Meunier shines through. Butterscotch and apples start the party off with more cherries and citrus playing along. A nice long, dry finish. Vibrant and captivating. Moussé and Special Club champagnes never disappoint.
