Tastes like it should. Napa in a bottle — 5 months ago
Very classic Napa Cab that flies down the middle. The bouquet was ripe raspberries and blackberries, small note of currant and cedar. Front palate was incredibly soft and retained nice acidity...crushed blackberries, graphite, strawberry skin, and smoke. However, the middle and end on the palate felt a bit flat. Decanting improved it a small bit, but it lost weight after entry and the structure wavered. Lower in ABV than many Napa cabs, so maybe that threw me off. It still had a great balance of red and black fruits, hibiscus, and dark chocolate covered plum. Textbook 2014 in terms of accessibility and plush nature. — 4 years ago
One of the bottles we brought back from our annual Napa trip in Sept of 2021. We try to visit 1-2 small/off the radar wineries during our visit, and this was a recommended stop by one of the wineries we were visiting. Off the beaten path outside of St Helena, behind Ehlers. Alycia Mondavi makes the wines for this very small family operation. All winemaking takes place at the family home on a beautiful secluded property. Luckily for me, they are known for their cab franc.
My score here is based on potential…this is probably closer to a 90-91 today. Compared to the 2012 I had a few months back where the main note was raspberry fig, this was a bit unyielding, even after a 3hr double decant and revisiting the next day. This is undeniably CabFranc in its fruit profile…lots of brambly red and black fruit like black cherries and dark plum with espresso and a hint of potpourri on the nose. The palate was a bit like a bull in a China shop as it was all over the place and quite gripping on the finish (unlike the 2012). Lots of dark, chalky notes with sweet pipe tobacco leaf wrapped berry fig. I’d leave this alone for 3-5yrs at least unless you can give it an extremely long decant. — 5 months ago
Solid 2018 from Ehlers. This #sthelenacab is delicious and smooth. One of my favorites from Premiere Napa Valley 2020 #pnv20 #pnv2020 20 cases produced. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Ehlers’ organic estate vineyard, which produces wines of great distinction
Located in the north end of St. Helena, the vineyard is composed of very shallow, gravelly loam soils
The wine is unfined, unfiltered and is aging in 100% new French oak
Your wine is the first vintage from winemaker Laura Díaz Muñoz
This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Block 4 on our property which is our highest elevation block. The Cone See vines are planted in volcanic soil, the same profile found on Howell Mountain. Our vineyards have been farmed organically since 2005 and certified since 2008. This 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best expressions of the estate - rich in tannins and color, aromas of boysenberry, raspberry jam and forest floor herbs promise the potential of getting better in the years to come.
