Cornas Syrah 2018

This veers towards the Sozet school rather then the Beliando/Fauterie school. Mesmerizing nose of game, herbs, lavender, fresh tweed, blackberry, smoked meats, gravy, just impossibly complex and super super stunning. The black fruits are crystalline and focused. Wow. What purity. The lavender top note is truly spectacular. Palate is superb. Sweet fruited and with all kinds of freshness. Super acids. It’s 18 so there is a wall of tannin and also huge god level minerality. Olives galore on the palate. Stunning. But man does this need air. I’ll be back. Wow the energy on this wine is just incredible. Nose is crazy mineral now after 3 hours. Palate has picked up heft and minerality. So juicy. The most backwards young but maybe the most promising young vintage so far. — 13 days ago

Classic Cornas with a modern bent. Olives, bacon and violets with a heavy sprinkling of pepper. Needs to age and integrate quite a bit, but yum. Long long finish I didn't want to end. — 6 years ago

La Sabarotte Cornas Syrah 2012

This is settling in nicely, the terroir is beginning to show through the winemaking and becoming more truthful to Cornas. Oak and extraction are integrating nicely. Granular tannin, firm mineral feel on the back end. Blackberry, olive, beef blood, fur, cast iron, leather, ash, forest floral, autumnal. — 5 days ago

Les Royes St. Joseph Syrah 2016

What a wine! This Saint-Joseph from Domaine Courbis, from the limestone amphitheatre they call ‘Les Royes’ within the appellation (look out for the Blanc, too), is a great success in 2016 and an incredibly moreish wine overall.

The nose takes little time to unfurl, showing generous aromas of fresh, cool blackberry, espresso, violet and a touch of iron. The fruit has a wonderfully pure feel - as though it’s been squeezed straight into the glass. The palate is equally forthcoming and way above what I expected. Ripe fruit combines with bold acidity and supple tannins to provide a very, very seductive mouthfeel, and a lengthy finish.

That vast appellation of Saint-Joseph can be very variable - but if they were all this good, it would stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Cornas, Cote-Rotie and Hermitage.

Nothing like this wine. Amazing nose. So pure and classy. Olive, meat, blood, blueberry, mint, herbs, gravy, granite and so much more. A symphony of northern Rhone Syrah. Palate has so much freshness and so much clarity it’s really one of the most clean and vivid old school wines I’ve ever had. This is so clean and crystalline but never strays from its somewhat wild roots. What a wine. The granitic force from beginning to the end is something. Such good concentration and so pure. Juicy as all can be. Has those 18 tannins but ripe and sweet. A beautiful bottle of St. Joseph. — 3 months ago

St. Joseph Syrah 2015

Solid. Great value N. Rhône wine, captures the Domaine’s style very well. Nicely fruited, all black with riper tones of plum and crushed ripe blackberry, a denser and more concentrated offering, juicy. A kiss of blue fruit pokes out on the palate. Licorice, sweet meat/jerky, mocha, smoke, menthol. Drinking very well in its youth, still has some grip and substance to lay down for a few years. — 4 years ago
