Believe it or not, in the early 1970’s there were less than a handful productive wineries in the Radda UGA; Castello di Volpaia was one of those. Radda was simply remote and difficult to get to. However, times have changed and today, there are more than 40 active wineries! Volpaia is somewhat unique in that its vineyards are some of the highest elevation in the entire Chianti Classico zone.
Popped and poured, the 2021 “Chianti Classico” pours a light ruby color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with light notes of cherry, orange pith, dried green herbs and earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. If Radda has a reputation for more elegant wines, then Volpaia is a leading example. While it’s more “reserved” than many others, there is substance and has a story to be shared. Drink now with some patience but I think this will be even more enjoyable in the next 5-10 years. — 11 days ago
Nice quaff. Sometimes simple is all you need. Well balanced. Organic. Paired with penne alla vodka with sweet Italian sausage. From half bottle. — a day ago
This wine has a dark purple color and a complex nose. Aromas of black cherry, violets, anise, clove, leather and earth are plentiful in the bouquet. The palate offers a medium mouthfeel with great acidity and firm tannins. The fruit flavors are carried along by the more savory aspects of the profile. It is a wine which would love a pairing with a steak or a pork chop, or with a meaty stew. — a month ago
Medium Ruby red color with aromas of dark berry fruit and earthy spice, blend of 90% Sangiovese with rest Canaiolo. On the palate flavors of black cherry and plum with tobacco, floral and earthy cedar notes. Full-bodied, well balanced soft drying tannins on a smooth medium+ finish. Grab some Italian food and enjoy the great value wine. Consistent quality, a Fav!! — 17 hours ago

Very good. — 3 days ago
Glorious. Nose is ripe strawberries with some raspberry in the background. Strawberries stay on the palate and linger into slight tar, cedar, and rose petals. Long finish. Moderate tannins. — 18 days ago
This wine is colored dark purple, almost inky. The nose is wonderful, with an earthiness leading the way for plum, cherry and tar. The palate is loaded with dark fruit, earth and black pepper. The tannins are fairly smooth, but they work well against a Bolognese sauce. There is a nice acidity and a wonderful herbal finish. — 5 days ago
Deep Ruby color with aromas of red fruits, floral, citrus and smoky oak, 100% Sangiovese. On the palate flavors of ripe blackberry, cherry and plum flavors with floral notes, cacao, tobacco and toasty notes from oak aging. Fine ripe tannins, long finish ending with fruit and an earthy smoky mineral spice character. Nice! Will age! Organic! — 6 days ago
