Texas Hill County Grenache Rosé 2020

Fall Creek Vineyards Grenache Rosé 2020, Texas

Happy National Rosé day!

Very light salmon in color, almost see-through.

Pretty strong fruity nose with yellow apples, peaches, citrus and spices.

Medium plus in body, buttery and smooth, with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with citrus, lemons, green apples, grapefruits, spices and white pepper.

Tangy finish with limes.

This is a really nice Rosé from Texas. Easy drinking and nicely balanced, with a nice mouthfeel.

A great wine to have all by itself or by the pool. Not bitter, which I really liked.

I paired it with cheeses and crackers.

100% Grenache grapes are grown on clay and limestone soils.

13% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

Col Solare

Shining Hill Red Mountain Red Blend 2016

This is the least expensive wine Col Solare makes, about fiddy. It still fucks. Btw I’m drinking and scrolling and about to check in a LOT of wine sitting in my account I forgot about with extremely suspect notes based purely on drunken memory. 🎉 — 5 months ago

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2017

Light silvery, greeny colour. Good intensity with preserved lemon and kaffir lime profile. Plenty of acidity to aid a long future evolution over which it should gain in density and nuance. — 7 days ago

Chalk Hill

Estate Bottled Chalk Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2018

A really great SB! Blend of 96% Sauv Blanc & 4% Sauv Gris adding an interesting dynamic to the wine & distinctive aromas (prior vintages added some Semillon) Pale lemon color, citrus, tropical & floral aromas. On the palate peach, melon, herb & earthy tones, well balanced with acidity, smooth yet robust on a long finish ending rich with wet stone character. Good value! A Fav!! Tried several times, very consistent!! — 13 days ago

Channery Hill Merlot Blend 2017

Rich velvety aroma. Raspberry brambles, cherries, plums, blueberry cobbler. Soft OK roundness. Gentle tennis. Easy to drink. But complex enough to think about.. All right Virginia. #virginiaisforloverz — 8 days ago

Salt Lick Vineyards GSM 2017

Say hello to my first Texan wine.

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Gorgeous nose of blueberries, cooked plums, violets, light oak, vanilla, wildflowers, light herbs, spices, tobacco and black pepper.

Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, vinaigrette, coffee, light oak, vanilla, earth, licorice, spices and black pepper.

Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and peppercorn.

This is a nice surprise. This GSM blend is drinking very nicely now. Showing a great nose with a nice mouthfeel. Tangy and interesting. Soft and rich.

Good right out of the bottle and a good wine to have all by itself, or with food. Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years.

Spicy, fruit forward and interesting. A nice porch wine that I paired with cheeses and crackers.

A blend of 60% Mourvedre, 36% Syrah and 4% Grenache. Aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months.

14% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

I get used to Rombauer as my chardonnay baseline. This held up and then some. It’s not quite as oaky and mouth-filling, but it’s still terrific. The main note of difference I got was tobacco, and I really enjoyed that. — 7 days ago

Once & Future Wines

Old Hill Ranch Zinfandel 2018

This was our “back-up” bottle just in case the 1981 Clos du Val Zinfandel was DOA. In the end, the vitality of the ’81 rendered a back-up unnecessary however, we were resolved to open this nevertheless. The Old Hill Ranch is a historic vineyard endowed with a natural beauty that has few peers. Carefully farmed as a field blend with 30 other varieties, the vineyard is thought to be home to the oldest vines grafted to St. George rootstock (some of them are over 130 years old!!). The wine pours a bright ruby with no signs of sediment. On the nose, dark sour cherry, meat fat, brambles, and pie spice. On the palate, a mix of tart dark and red fruits, minerals, and a soft touch of baking spice. The finish is dry and long. Remarkable structure. Medium+ tannin, medium+ acid. This is a wine with tremendous vigor and it’s just getting started. While this is drinking very well already, I suspect these will have a very long life and should drink very well into the 2030’s and possibly, beyond. — 19 days ago

Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz 2012

Big and inky Barossa heaps of fruit and oak but not overpowering like some from the region. Had 2012 in 2021 but would not lose anything with another 5-10 years careful cellaring. — 7 days ago
