Caiarossa

Toscana IGT Bianco 2020

Star bright yellow gold. Inviting nose of chalky lemon rind. Medium palate confirms the nose adding lime (the fruit), lime (the mineral), and green apple. Firm acidity from entry to the moderate finish which adds cilantro and cucumber that takes over the roof of the mouth. Wonderfully complex Super Tuscan white (Viognier and Chardonnay). Mediterranean fare is, of course, a natural -- Bronzino comes racing to mind -- but try with any seafood, lighter poultry, or cream sauce. Drink now through 2027. — 5 days ago

Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2018

2016: Good juice, an IGT blend of Syrah, Cab Franc and typical Super Tuscan grapes. A mouthful of velvety fruit makes it a crowd pleaser, but maybe just a bit two-dimensional at this stage. $52 at Vine. — 9 months ago

Aria di Caiarossa Red Blend 2019

Dark red purple. Inviting nose and medium full palate of black cherry, baked plum, and charred blueberry. Dusty ashy tannins support from entry as does the medium acidity. Fleshes out substantially after just a short time in the glass, but the fruit stays dark adding some juicy red apple and with a hint of ash. Finish is moderately long and continues the palate. The Aria is Caiarossa's entry into the premium level more than the top of the entry, and needs premium level cuisine to shine. Steaks and up. Drink now through 2030. — a month ago

Pergolaia Toscana Sangiovese Blend 2018

Dark ruby with dark purple red core. Black cherry Kuchen and terra cotta dominate the nose and medium palate. Juicy medium plus acidity. Fine, medium plus tannins bat cleanup. What's not to love about Caiarossa's entry-level red? Everything you want in a Toscana at this price point. Great with food (I'm having penne with sausage… you can try a southwestern steak with a baked potato), and a tasty autumn sipper all with enough "stuff" to lay down for a short while. Drink now through 2030. Preferably now. — a year ago

Super Tuscan Blend 2013

Blinded, I thought it was a right-bank Bordeaux with some age (10 years was my hunch) - not a bad guess. Definitely not a profile I’m particularly fond of, but credit where credit’s due, this was showing very well.
Intensely aromatic with notes of vanilla, spices, tobacco, smoke, coffee, plums, and even a touch of violets. On the palate, it was rich, soft, velvety, creamy, and spicy, with just the right amount of brightness to keep it fresh. Felt really balanced at the moment, so perhaps its at its first peak, but I’d be inclined to give it a bit more cellar time to tame the overt oak character.
