Breaky Bottom

Terrasses Côte-Rotie Syrah 2016

9.5

Is endowed with superbly complex, profound aromas. Superbly polished and shaped. Modern leaning but not overripe and framed with brilliant acidities. The aroma is one of those rare kind that projects three dimensional twin image of the body, totally unperturbed from the oxidation for hours. Becomes like a super luxury Douro Reds by the middle of the bottle and then settles down into a genuine Cote Rotie by the bottom third. — 6 days ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Big, bold, Jammy and incredibly expressive Cab Sav. You know that red stripe on the bottom of the California Flag? Maybe it represents the high quality reds of Napa, like this masterpiece. A lot more fruit then you might expect in this variety, this manages to merge big and jammy with serious and full body sturdy. Crisp, clean and sharp on the finish and a wonderful start to finish glass. Slight chocolate/tobacco ish touch on the finish notes. Overall, a well rounded and serious Californian Red! — 24 days ago

Estate Bottled Napa Valley Zinfandel 1979

Another incredible oldie that held up amazingly well. Cork looked like it’s ten years old with only bottom third stained through though it did break apart when pulled and lead seal is in excellent condition. Wine level showed no loss. Wonder if recorked at some point. Nice ruby color with little bricking. Whiff of worrisome sherry note that dissipated very quickly. Again like that Souverain Pinot a beautiful endlessly sniffable nose of almost fermented fruits and apples and autumnal forest floor carrying through to firmly textured palate but a relatively short finish. It’s a class act that still plays well. So second gem of the four. — a month ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2016

@Delectable This is their Rosé from Cabernet. Please add.

When you arrive at AXR, they greet you with their Rosé. It’s pressed from 100% Cabernet.

The extraction is right at my preferred limit. The color here is slightly darker. The palate is round, rich with good viscosity. The fruit flavors are a little darker; black cherries, blackberries, strawberries, watermelon, orange citrus, really excellent mid minerality, red & pink & rose pedals, refreshing acidity and a smartly polished finish.

We enjoyed this 2019 quite a bit.

Photos of; their tasting room at the back of the property, the table they greet you & have you sign a Covid wavier, bottom to top view of their beautiful redwood trees and the wooded areas behind the tasting room building.

Hartford Court

Russian River Valley Chardonnay

Super-dipper entry level gem from Hartford Court. Their line-up, top to bottom, is superb. The 2018 RRV chard is densely flavored, hitting all the right notes. Creamy and balanced. Nice clean, long finish. Bravo. — a month ago

Domaine Bruno Clair

"Les Longeroies" Marsannay Pinot Noir 2017

9.1

The fruit is slimmer than that of Mortet at the top, but well-matched creamy oak fattens the middle and the dark mineral layer provides solid foundation at the bottom. Bruno Clair wines are always austere like Bize’s, but slightly beefier and darker. There is a set of qualities here, class, enlightenment and restraint, that distinguishes the best from the rest. Overnight the aroma intensifies significantly. — a month ago

Domaine Louis Moreau

Vaillons Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2016

I misplaced my notes on this Premier Cru Chablis but I do remember the lovely stone fruit flavours and low acid - quite a ripe rendition for Chablis. The bottom line - Delicious. Can’t see the point of extended cellaring for this one. — a month ago

Château Clerc Milon

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

Showing all the aspects of a grand Bordeaux vintage.

It’s velvet, candied floral, ruby; creamed raspberries, blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, dry stone, limestone & sandstone, black rich earth, tobacco, used leather, tomato with leaf, elegance defined, well knitted & balanced, dark spice, dry top soil, underbrush, candied florals of; fresh, withering, dark, red, purple and touch of blue flowers. Round acidity for days with a long, ripe, velvet finish persistent that falls into a dry minerality on the long set.

Photos of; us spending time learning in the vineyard with our friend & Clerc Milon Winemaker-Jean, Sofia picking the 2012 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Merlot, same day dinner at Chateau Mouton Rothschild sitting with their CEO who was retiring & subsequently ended up running Montrose. Bottom pic is Chateau Clerc Milon. We enjoyed 75 Mouton out of 6L with dinner. The vintage Andy Warhol designed the label. Each artist is given two cases of Mouton as payment if their artwork is selected for their bottle.

Our hands are all over the 2012 Chateau Mouton Rothschild & Clerc Milon wines. So, you probably don’t want to buy those or sell them on an auction site if you own. 😜
