Kita

Camp 4 Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Kitá, red blend, Santa Ynez Valley, CA, Vintage 2014, ABV 13.5%. The blend is comprised of 48% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot. @kitawines

👁 It had a beautiful purple hue and vibrant notes of black cherry, blackberry, black currant, plum, violets, cedar, nutmeg, vanilla, leather, and tobacco. 👃 👄

I loved learning about the background on this wine and winemaker Tara Gomez, who studied enology with financial help from her tribe, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. 💕 Tara has worked with iconic figures in the California wine world — such as Fess Parker and J. Lohr— and has traveled the world, honing her own unique style of winemaking that blends the best of old world and new world techniques. 👏👏👏 @tgomez805

This red blend is made of grapes grown on the Camp 4 Vineyard, purchased by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in 2010, when Tara was hired as head winemaker. 🍇🍇 The land was previously cultivated by Fess Parker, who had an influence on Tara’s budding career while interning at Fess Parker Winery during her enology studies.

The word "Kitá" means "Our Valley Oak" in the Santa Ynez Chumash native language of Samala. The wine is speaks to “place” and respect for the land from which it is cultivated. 🌎 🌳 Yields and production are kept small to promote sustainable growing practices and the grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with minimal intervention.

"Love You Bunches" Carbonic Sangiovese 2020

Blind Date wine! Blind tasting notes: "Bright ruby red, candied red fruits, jolly rancher and bubble gum. Low acid, low tannin, slightly effervescent. The food pairing suggestion makes us think Italy, but the fruitiness and low acid and tannin makes us think Not Italy." Soooo tasty with a BLT and pasta salad with tomato and basil. — 13 days ago

Harrington

Fratelli Vineyard Teroldego 2011

Teroldego is mostly grown in Trentino but somehow Bryan Harrington got his hands on some from the Santa Clara Valley, of all places. Dark red in color so it is often used as a blending grape, but tasted just fine on its own. 2011 vintage, 13.1% abv. — 15 days ago

Au Bon Climat

Nuits-Blanches au Bouge Santa Maria Valley Estate Bottled Chardonnay 2015

N: Lemons, ginger, banana peel, very fresh, like a just passed thunderstorms sun. You can smell the oak, but it’s like a ghost in the background.
P:Lemon custard, ever so light, creamy, tart, long finish, slight wood. He was really talented.
R.I.P. Jim Clendenen
If served this “ blind”, very few would peg it as a Cali Chard. A stylistic response to criticism of previous, over the top Chards.
With time and air, some flinty mineral goodness appears along with the sensation of citrus pith.

Rose Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands) 2020

Pale pink orange; medium intensity aromas I’d fresh strawberries, watermelon, pink grapefruit, tangerine; dry, high acid, medium alcohol, medium body, medium intensity flavors consistent with aromas; quite flavorful and concentrated — 2 days ago

Annika Coteaux de Clair Rose 2019

Light salmon in color. Nose has a rich floral aroma, like peony. Palette is fresh and smooth, finishing with a sharp frontal attack and lingering ripe cranberry throughout. Brilliant Rosé. — 18 hours ago

Classic Belle Glos style - fruit forward and really smooth for a Pinot. Great to revisit, and good vintage. — 6 days ago

Santa Maria Valley Viognier 2019

This was my note from my last tasting of this: Bought this after tasting at the vineyards. I usually avoid non N. Rhone viognier like the plague (or Covid, too soon?). But this was excellent, and compelling enough to make me buy more than 1 btl. Notes from Day 2 open, and in the fridge overnight, and then in a refrigerated bag during a hike followed by a long car ride. On the nose: peach, tangerine, lychee, so vibrant and with a soft minerality. On the palate: excellent acidity, which is always the problem outside the Rhone, good density...sappy without being overly oily, fantastic minerality on the palate with a soft bitter walnut note. Excellent.

This time, perhaps a bit less minerality.
