Valdegines Single Vineyard Rioja Alavesa Tempranillo 2014

Inky dark in color. The nose is crushed cranberry, tobacco leaf, dark cherry, rosemary, sage, and thyme with a hint of barnyard funk. The palate is dark cherry, cinnamon, clove, American oak, black pepper, and bitters. Medium plus tannins, high alcohol, and high acid. A big, masculine, spicy wine that should match well with cured jamon, rich sausages, lamb, and gamey red meats. — 5 months ago

Viñas de Gain Selección de Añada Rioja Tempranillo 2002

Just needed a couple decades to come to life👍🏼
K&L notes

The Artadi Estate was created in 1985 by the dynamic, visionary winemaker, Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle. His objective was to seek and nurture the concept that Tempranillo , when cultivated at high altitude, low-cropped and from old vines, produces extraordinarily rich, deep colored, and profound wines. This, coupled with specific barrel treatment (with minor oak American oak influences) produces one of Rioja's most exciting new wines. Artadi is about purity of extracted fruit with almost Burgundian textures: sheer power, complexity and startling finesse. The results have been astounding! These are some of the most exciting of Rioja's new-wave wines.

Viña El Pisón Rioja Tempranillo 2012

Very smooth. A bit smoky. I know I should have shown more patience but I have been waiting on this one a few years and was in the mood. Very good and I suspect would have a lot more complexity a few years from now. — 2 months ago

La Poza de Ballesteros Single Vineyard Rioja Tempranillo 2009

A second tasting of this Rioja after a 2 year gap. While I thoroughly enjoyed it last time I've nudged my score up just a touch as it was even better than I remembered. Maybe the extra time in bottle has helped or it was the hour in the decanter, or perhaps a bit of both. The tannins felt much smoother this time so this is one which benefits from some patience while it opens up over a couple of hours. — 7 months ago

Marqués de Murrieta

Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2007

2007 Marques de Murroeta Castillo Ygay Rioja. Ordered off the list at Kokk in SF bc the bottle of ‘94 Artadi we brought was a bad bottle. Decanted this, but still just way too big. Stuck to the mouth; big, juicy red fruit flavor (plum jam). Infanticide. — a year ago

Viñas de Gain Rioja Viura 2014

Rioja Blanco, not the Rose
K&L notes,
White Artadi? I am shocked that I didn't know that it existed, but I am so glad to know that it exists. This is everything that you would expect that it would be. This old vine Viura from Alavesa. It has the transparency that you expect for the winery, the palate is so expresive of the chalky soils of the region. This is not a traditional oaky oxidized white. This is a pure modern expresion of the varietal. Apples, citrus, drying floral notes and a dusty chalkiness. It is very fresh and the wine has the energy and drive that you come to expect from the reds.

So glad to see another Artadi fan! We’ve been to the winery and vineyards twice. Their whole portfolio is simply the best expression of the grapes from this region. Including the hard to get, lightly effervescent Txakoli. Not a glamorous grape, but they do wonders with it.
