At the Yarra Yering dinner last Thursday night with winemaker, Sarah Crowe. YY was one of the first vineyards in Australia to make an excellent Pinot Noir. I remember buying a dozen of the 1986 - long since gone of course. Made by the late Dr Bailey Carrodus. A mixed planting of 4 clones in 1969. Red fruited with a touch of violets. 30% in new French barrels with the balance in used oak. The over riding lasting impression is its silky texture.

My last YY 2015 Pinot Noir. A good balance between red fruits and savouriness and probably drinking at its peak. I have always loved YY Pinot Noir Noir back when it was undoubtedly the best Pinot Noir in Australia in the mid 1980’s made by the legendary Dr Bailey Carrodus. A lot more competition for that mantle these days but Yarra Yering is still kicking major goals as recently as 2 weeks ago winning a Platinum award and 97 points for their 2022 Pinot Noir at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London. The following night aromatic red florals.

Back in the 1980’s Yarra Yering under the stewardship of Dr Bailey Carrodus made probably the best Pinot Noir in Australia. Bailey has passed on and YY now in the very capable hands of Sarah Crowe, a former wine maker of the year in Australia. To be honest I was expecting more from this Pinot. Red fruited (red cherry) nose with sappiness and root vegetable nuances. Good concentration but in need of more complexity and interest. Perhaps time in cellar will bring this. 97 points from James Halliday so he was impressed. YY are currently selling this as an aged release on their website for $165 which is too expensive. I paid $90 in 2016.

Got this one gratis from a friend of mine. A 1989 Pinot from Victoria, freakin’ AUSTRAAAAALIA.
#now I’ve had some older pinots from those parts so I knew it wasn’t a joke and thankfully what I knew did indeed come true. It’s joyous, fascinating juice.
The rich, thick maroon color to it lays bare its time on this planet, and the nose itself alone provides a complexity that only age can allow. the palate is an evolutionary joy from rich bing cherries to a more established wink to those who know.

#wine so fine is #Pinot #sublime from #YarraYering. Folks accustomed to #bombastic #NewWorld versions that have more in common with #Grenache aka #Garnacha might be let down with this #earthy, lithe little number by the late, great #DrCarrodus whose wines were (are if you are lucky enough to have a few-I do!) never #jammy #blockbusters but rather, subtle #herbaceous and oh so #sexy efforts that age gracefully. At 11 years, this #YarraValley wine still has a goodly amount of #delicious life yet remaining, with a great nose of #briars, #brambles, dried #cherries and hints of #saddle. #palate is alive, with currents of energetic #acidity sparking the tongue with #flirty #kisses of #flavour and a #finish that is so much fun!

Bring it! Fabulous beast @peterkandw you absolutely killed it with1994 @YarraYering Pinot 19yrs young. Loving the animal. Patience required to comprehend just how much evolution & refinement occurs with Yarra Teri g wine over time. As a winemaker it does my head in! You try something, look at the wine over to five years, think you've got it sorted make changes in the vineyard & winery, then on it's 19th B'day it freaks you out tells you it's become a sophisticated adult & the zits have gone. It's no longer a gangle creature working out how to use it's arms & legs. It's moving gracefully, caressing & enchanting all who sit for a moment in it's company. #filthyoldvino #wine #pinotnoir #yarravalley #yarrayering #1994 20 years to complete an experiment is a long time!
