Incredibly solid BdeM in its prime. Needed about 45 min decant.

Not typically a producer I like, but this was solid. Although the 17’ Il Poggione BdM was certainly more tannic and robust than the 18’ Biondi Rosso, I thought it was still quite elegant with its zesty acidity, floral aromas, and a chewy palate fruit. Needed some 3 hours in the decanter to peep through the veil and calm the tannins. Dark-fruited, with tobacco, spice, wood, dried roses, and herbs. Tasty.

Orange peel, dried cherry, tamarind, cedar spice, sweet and tart on the palate. Fierce, but tight. Plentiful fine grained tannins. Needs time.

Aged in French oak barrels for about 36 months, produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes, picked by hand from 20-year old vines. Deep Ruby with concentrated ripe red fruit aromas and complex floral spice scents. On the palate, this outstanding full-bodied wine shows flavors of cherry and dark berry fruit, layered spices, cinnamon, tobacco & cacao, well integrated. Savory, smooth tannins, smoky oak notes, long rich finish. Drinking well, still has room to age. Outstanding! Tasting Sample.

Founded at end of 1800 when Lavinio Franceschi, Florence land owner, visited the area. Over a century later, Tenuta covers an area of 530 hectares (140 planted with vines; 50 with olive trees). Aged in French oak for 36 months, 100% Sangiovese hand picked from 20-year old vines. A Gem! Deep Ruby. rich berry fruit aromas with complex spice. Palate has rich berry fruit flavors, baked cherry, with tobacco, cacao & subtle spice. Soft tannins, long finish ending with seductive earthy tones. Nice, aged well!

I’ve been itching to try Il Poggione’s 2015 Brunello since buying a case this time last year. I could count on one hand how many Brunellos I’ve had in the past, so this was exciting from the POV not just of this being a very highly rated wine, but from it being a new experience and foray into the world of Tuscany.

It has a translucent crimson robe, with aromas of dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, iron, beef blood and from somewhere an aromatic lift of lavender.

The palate is defined by vivacious acidity, mouthwatering tannin and a core of candied cherry, walnut, dark chocolate, espresso, all cut to a very savoury tune.

Very, very long life ahead. Would love to taste this alongside Produttori del Barbaresco’s 2016 Barbaresco in ten years’ time.

Spices, sour cherries, strawberries and a bit of animal and dried herbs on the nose and palate, bursting with aromas. Nice acidity and tannins. Will have with steak later so will reassess.

Il Poggione 2015 Brunello di Montalcino offers up a dark, earthy, almost animal-like expression, showing black soil and undergrowth, giving way to crushed black cherry, dusty spice, and dried florals which lift the experience. On the palate, soft, fleshy textures usher in fresh cherry and strawberry, as brisk acids add energy, with savory herbs and minerals saturating, as the 2015 Il Poggione’s fruit nearly masks its structural core. The finish is long yet fresh, with classic, fine tannins, dried red fruits and pretty inner floral tones lingering throughout this perfectly balanced expression. The 2015 s pure class and built for the cellar. (Eric Guido, Vinous, April 2020)
