Cherries and red apple skins. Surprisingly earthy.

Great producer but I find this particular wine underwhelming for the money. Maybe Barbera doesn’t need this kind of treatment? Could just be the vintage based on other taster’s notes.

Better on day 2: Charcoal.

Great Barbera, drinks like a Barolo with milder acidity and tannin as per the grape’s typicity. All the Piemontese greats make serious Barbera and this is one of the better I have had in quite some time.

Tasty and perfect for the cold. Sweet cherries, licorice and a touch of menthol. Good with braised lamb shank and not too acidic to finish on its own.

I love a good Barbera and this is that. Great depth and nuance, the 2010 Roagna is a sophisticated wine that is intensely food friendly. Dark cherry, tar, mint and licorice combine. It's a stunner and was made even better when paired with a gorgeous risotto lovingly prepared by dear friends.

Imminently drinkable. Great overall balance yet not massively complex right now.

This is an enormously enjoyable Barbera from Roagna. Leather and plums and spices too, all woven together beautifully. Intense and complex. Such a pleasure to drink wines from top tier producers and, as is often the case with Barbera, this one was a terrific value. (Artwork by Dan Miller).

This is Barbera? You could be tricked into thinking it's a medium aged Nebbiolo. The nose showed lifted notes of dried cherry, strawberry and sweet herbs with hints of pine, leather, and dusty earth coming forward over time. On the palate, medium-bodied textures were offset by zesty acidity with firm, grippy tannin, saturating tart cherry, dried apple, saline-minerality, and inner floral tones. It finished on sweet herbs and minerals, providing a youthfully tannic sensation. This is one of the most interesting and engaging Barbera I've ever tasted.
