A lovely Chardonnay offering honeysuckle notes and core of pure citrus fruit accompanied by a nice acid backbone and savory/salty character. $70.

I recently made the carefully considered claim that there is no more exciting place for making California Chardonnay right now than the Santa Cruz Mountains - @santacruzmountainwine. Some of the most stellar bottles of the stuff are emerging from hidden nooks and crannies among the redwoods and steep, fog-shrouded slopes. This bottle (received as a press sample) is a perfect example. Lemon oil and lemon pith aromas give way to silky-textured lemon pith, lemon juice, pink grapefruit and this saline resinous quality that makes the mouth water excessively. Almost impossible not to follow one sip with another. Well done @rhys_vineyards. The vineyard gets it’s name from the Pajaro shale series that sits under a scant 16” of topsoil at 1000 feet of elevation.

First bottling of this vineyard and the wine is already amazing. Can’t wait to try each year as the vineyards mature. Rhys does it again!

Newest vineyard in their lineup. The nose starts with walnut and hazelnut husk together with faint florals and lemon custard. The palate is much leaner, leading with acidity and stony crushed rock in a long, ti going finish. I suspect the two aspects will integrate even better in a couple years

From 375 ml - It’s on the tropical side but not excessively so, with pineapple and melon along with wet river stones, it is deceptively intense on the palate with a refreshing spike of mouth-watering acidity in the middle and impressive length. It reminds me of a young Cotat Sancerre in a good way and isn’t like any other Rhys Chardonnay I’ve had.
