Pieropan
Calvarino Soave Classico Garganega Trebbiano
Soave, Verona, Veneto, Italy

Quite shy at this stage, the single-vineyard 2019 Calvarino from Soave’s iconic producer Pieropan takes quite some coaxing from the glass, even having been decanted. It has reticent but enticing aromas of lemon juice, honey, some nuttiness and even a hint of star anise, while the palate is much more forthcoming. Lemons first, fresh, ripe and delicious; then, it caresses into peaches and melons, with tangy acidity but a very supple texture. The finish is quite long, and saline. Really a very pretty wine that I think will ultimately benefit from some mid-term ageing.

The 2019 Soave Classico Calvarino opens slowly, yet time in the glass reveals a pungent mix of lemon oil and wet stone, offset by an enriching note of almond paste. This is elegant, with medium-bodied weight nicely contrasted by brilliant acidity and zesty green citrus tones that build tension. The 2019 Calvarino finishes long and lightly structured, leaving the cheeks puckering, as hints of kiwi skin and minerals fade. There’s a seriously bright future here. In 2019, the Calvarino production was reduced by 30% due to frost. (Eric Guido, Vinous, April 2022)

A blend of 85% Garganega & 15% Trebbiano di Soave, from the heart of Soave, the Winery of Leonildo and Teresita Pieropan dates back to 1860. Bright straw with green edges and aromas of stone fruits, floral blossoms and herb spice. On the palate apple and pineapple with lemon citrus notes. Well balanced with clean lively acidity carrying through to a pleasing finish. Tasting a Sample.

Yellow/gold. New oak on the nose, tangerine and nectarine, saline — briny, oxidative — cheese rind. Leesy, smoky. Botrytis notes: honey and ginger! Beeswax. Clay/mushroom/compost. Medium plus to elevated acidity and alcohol. Phenolic bitterness. Long lasting finish.

Lemon, candied lime zest, pineapple, vanilla, white flowers on the nose. Citrusy and seamlessly well rounded in the mouth. Delicious.

Medium bodied and a green/yellow color indicate some softening, but the wine itself is very green and fruit forward, green figs (but just the vegetal smell), with some acidity and notes of yellow fruit rind, crisp mountain air, grassy notes, and a slight baking note, like pastry, hidden away underneath. Palate is crisp, dry, with a balanced acidity, lots of limestone, crisp yellow fruits, maybe some yellow grapefruit, celery hints, lemon juice tartness, and an emerging grassy energy that starts to swell long after the sip is complete. Dry to the end, but not bitterly so, very nice.

Maybe this was too old since it came off a bit strange. Not much on the nose and the taste had somewhat of off putting pear notes
