Vintage 2018 | Perhaps my brain is playing tricks with me? In my memory I have a very positive image of Montes Alpha. But this wine lacks some concentration. Not bad, but much more middle of the road then expected. And below my expectations.

Layers of cacao on this nose,

Garden veg, fresh and bountiful, green pepper, tomato stalk, vanillin, medium oak, Solid acidity. This is a classically well rounded Cab - though one that has a heck of a lot of finesse and beats most of our domestic cabs at the price point.

Good value to be had here. Chilean Cabernet from Colchagua, although I suspect there’s some Merlot in here too. Quite aromatic with liquid violets, black currant, blackberry, red plum and cherry, touches of tobacco, blue gum and toasted chestnut. Oak presence is negligible. Medium level of tannins sinewy in nature with acidity set to medium. Medium to full bodied and quite a fruit forward wine that would be a real crowd pleaser.

There’s lots of criticism about Montes but @ 2day’s Chilean Wine Tour WAW I found these really cultured & balanced.

Heat on the nose with bell pepper aromas, eucalyptus, fresh cut aloe, overripe blackberry, cassis, burnt persimmon, and mostly the box of cigar box. Tastes of rosemary, peppercorn, graphite, medium, clingy tannins, dried black cherry, prune, baked black currant, bing cherry and dark tobacco. A lot more wine than it costs, but the bell pepper is disconcerting. I go back and forth with this one. Nose and entry are clunky, but finishes much stronger.

Blind tasting. Surprisingly good. Game and meats on the nose. Fresh peppers also. Jammy on the fore pallet and then smooth and velvety on the finish. It wouldn’t be my first choice but that’s why blind tasting evolve my pallet.
