Trivia at Aldo Sohm wine bar. Our team lost by one point. This wine won by many points. I blind tasted my staff and they converged around Rhone. Great stuff!

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course two hours. The 2023 Morgon (S) pours a brilliant ruby/purple color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart red fruits: strawberry, raspberry, cherry, a touch of bubblegum, red flowers, licorice, black pepper, a mix of cool spices and rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. This is a more dense expression of Lapierre’s Morgon which isn’t a surprise considering the vintage. Quite lovely with chicken pâté. Drink now through 2037.

It is very pure—red raspberry, red cherry, and licorice, amped up with damp soil on the nose. The palate brings more licorice/anise/tarragon vibes, with a little lilac winking on the finish. The acid is vibrant, the tannins are dusky, and the alcohol is respectful.

Medium Ruby with red fruit and floral spice aromas. On the palate flavors of red raspberry, cherry, banana and earthy mint. Vivid acidity, fine tannins, medium+ finish, ending with fruit and spice.

It was fondue night so let’s drink some Beaujolais! This is my second time enjoying the 2021 Lapierre Morgan “S” and the first was enjoyed over the course of several days. With that first experience, there was positive evolution until the last glass. This time, I chose to pour into a decanter several hours prior to dinner. No formal notes but this exhibits a beautiful bouquet of raspberries, strawberries, pink flowers, herbs, stone minerals, and just a touch funky…reminding you of Lapierre’s natural sensibilities. Structure is medium…though acid kinda creeps up into the medium+ category. A wonderful pairing with fondue made with a 50/50 of Gruyère/Raclette and served in the Swiss style. Drink now with an extended decant or enjoy through 2031.

All the sayisfying, licorice-filled, clean, floral brightness I’ve come to expect from this cuvée. Ripe red berry fruit on the palate. Very enjoyable if less concentrated than the past few vintages.
