De l'Orée Ermitage Blanc Marsanne
100% old-vine Marsanne from the Les Murets lieu dit which is predominantly east facing on the hill. This was the most powerful of the three Hermitage Blancs tonight. The nose was redolent of marmalade, honey, butter cream frosting, and slate. Luxurious texture with a long finish. Lovely with monkfish, sweet potato, leek, and winter truffle. Drink now through 2034+.

Mar 17th, 2024Welcome to the rain forest. Oxidized ripe papaya mango nose and travels to palate. Please keep making these wines! So exotic so different. I hear Leon Russell singing Back to the Islands to a wine from a a cold forbidding very steep hill.

Jan 31st, 2021Rich, concentrated and complex. Acidity not surprisingly is a bit low, for me, but not at all flabby. Alcohol is also detectable, but not off putting. Liquid rocks, roasted hazelnuts, caramelized apples and honeysuckle. Viscous and creamy texture and a persistent finish. Old white Rhône is always a fun wine experience.

Sep 27th, 2020Interesting to have seen this against the Keller. It seems pretty unfair, for me at least, to have pitted a Marsanne against a Riesling, but there's surprisingly more similarities here than I'd like to admit. They were both highly intense, strongly herbal, almost-exotic in their fruit profile, and ungodly in length. Of course I preferred the Keller's striking incisiveness, but there's a certain elegance in the smoky minerality of the Chapoutier that's quite alluring. This is undoubtedly a RP100 - rich, oily, concentrated, and very full. Finishes deeply warming with a nutty bitter touch. Surprisingly, I actually liked this. Went well with our Chinese banquet.

Dec 29th, 2018Marmalade colored. Surprisingly dark and advanced looking. On the nose a little nuttiness. On the palate lucid and refreshing. Lovely balance without acidity.
