At the Henschke tasting weekend with Stephen and Pru. Amazing how good this was for its youth. You could happily drink this now although the winery says you could cellar this 15 plus years (from vintage). In chatting with Stephen I think this was what he was trying to achieve. Excellent vintage he said. Red and blue fruits - touches of anise and white pepper. 81% Shiraz, 11% Grenache, 6% Mataro and 2% Viognier (for aromatics). An affordable Henschke red at $40.

Blend of 67% Shiraz (co-fermented with 6% Viognier), 17% Grenache and 10% Mataro, deep Ruby with aromas of red and black fruits with floral, spice and funky reductive notes. On the palate flavors of blueberry and blackberry with black pepper spice, licorice with lively spice. Dusty tannins, long finish ending with fruit, slight oak, floral and spicy notes.

A blend of 73% Shiraz, 17% Grenache, 5% Mataro and 5% Viognier, dark Ruby with aromas of dark fruits, licorice, pepper spice and floral notes. On the palate flavors of ripe blackberry and plum with licorice, espresso and oak. Well balanced, great mouthfeel, soft fine tannins and texture, long finish ending with pepper spice, smoky oak and cacao. Very nice!

Henry’s Seven is a full-bodied red blend, made from 66% Shiraz, 15 % Grenache, 10 % Mourvèdre (locally known as Mataro) and 9% Viognier. Affluent aromas of black cherry, dark plum, fig, cedar, black pepper, and clove on the nose; dusty and dry on the palate with integrated tannins.

Man, kind of disappointed in this bottle.. had high expectations but I guess I should hold judgment until it ages a bit. Syrah, Grenache, mataro, and viognier blend from barrossa/Eden valley. A bit light and one dimensional on day one, but day two it really showed its potential. Richer and more structured on day 2, with a nice balance of cool high toned fruit and dark fruit and earth, but still not enough going on to really "catch" my attention.

Still cool to try this iconic producer however.. hopefully I can get my hands on some of their nicer stuff in the future.

Clear deep purple, medium + viscosity, legs
Clean and youthful on the nose, medium + intensity with aromas of wild strawberries, fresh cranberries, raspberries, floral hints of violet and lavender, a touch of vanilla.
On the palate the wine is dry, medium + acidity and alcohol, medium body, medium - tannins, medium + intensity with notes of wild berries, red and black cherries, black pepper, sweet spices. A touch of vanilla.
Almost long length. Great to drink now or to cellar for up to 5 years.

A GSM Blend with a splash of Viognier. Even Henschkes quaffers have that stamp of class that is given to their big gun cuvees. One of those very gluggable wines that disappear very quickly at the end of a very long lunch!
