Giacomo Borgogno & Figli
Antichi Vigneti Propri Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo
Opened just prior to service and poured into a decanter. This is the second time I have had the opportunity to enjoy the 1967 Riserva although, the previous bottle was a more recent library release from the Borgogno cellars. This was a period release and yet, the experience was similar.
The 1967 Riserva pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core moving towards a slightly orange rim. Medium viscosity with no staining of the tears and some slight signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous but showing much more power than the ‘67 Abbazia SS Annunziata we drank on the same evening. Again, there is a lovely mix of ripe and desiccated red and dark fruits with forest floor, porcini, dried roses, tar, some tobacco, dried herbs, dusty earth and exotic spices. On the palate, the wine is dry; medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long a savory. My previous notes suggested to drink now and while I still hold fast to that statement, twice in the span of 18mos with two separate bottlings encourages me to be a bit more bullish and suggest this has many years, perhaps decades left in the tank.

Tasted blind. Reddish tawny color, translucent and looks young. Notes of soy sauce, tea, molasses and some roses. Chewy, still has some pucker. Sweet fruit persists. Guessed ~2000 Barolo. Nice showing.

Nov 23rd, 2018Like the ‘71 Mascarello a good cork and a high fill that is where the similarities end.
This was a stereotypical aged Barolo and I say that as a compliment. Beautiful aromas of cherries, leather ands dried leaves. This tasted very fresh due to the wonderful acid levels. Juicy cherries , mushrooms, tobacco and dried meats all fought to get the attention of my tastebuds. A finish that defied its age. Wish I had another bottle because I don’t think this one is going anywhere for years

Oh wow. Black licorice. Dark fresh cherry. Gorgeous currant nose. Earth. So much fruit left. And tannin - still.

Dec 6th, 2021Smoky aromas, rosehip, old marmelade, dried roses and tar. Well kept acidity, tannins have integrated. Always such a pleasure to have an old bottle like this that is so much still alive.

Dec 30th, 2020Bottle was moved before opening. Garnet color, with a cloudy look. After a little bit of funk on the nose that blew off right away, it uncoiled to reveal a gorgeous wine, with rose petals, red fruit and molasses on the nose. On the body, same flavors but very viscous, and ended with a very long finish . Great bottle, glad I have a few more. Additional note: it was a red cap bottle.
