Grand, opulent style. I appreciate the achievement but prefer a little bit more finesse and less richness

Lacking a bit of freshness
Good now, but I doubt it will further improve
Still pretty complex

Stunningly complex and alive, this is what I was hoping to find when opening an older bottle of Smaragd Gruner Veltliner.

The color was medium gold, no hint at all of age here.

The nose however started to put us where we were thinking, but there was still some youth. A deep and penetrating nose of golden delicious apples, yellow plums, and quince paste. The nose was so deep I wanted to jump into the glass!

The palate was exceptional, perfectly balanced with excellent density, breadth and a crazy long finish of minerals, fine acidity and subtle, juicy golden fruits.

An epic wine for me and a new benchmark for Gruner for my palate.

To add to the magic I walked the vineyard earlier in the day.

Juicy peaches, smoke, candied ginger, candied lime zest, honey, mushrooms, wet rocks. Great density and extract. Crazy acid.

2015 Barrel sample. Lucas Pichler will put this juice into the bottles in about four weeks before starting selling it in September. Conspicuously elegant & lean without the big punch on the palate you normally get when you think about the Wachau. Unbelievable young, let it sleep in the cellar for 5-10 years to give it the chance to really come together.
