Meh. This wine never does it for me. It’s like $50 Bordeaux

1997 vintage. I love Musar reds, and this 1997 is no exception. Like a hypothetical blend of great Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Barolo, traditional Rioja and left bank Bordeaux. Amazing complexity and a truly unique style. And it remains one of the greatest values in the world of wine, less than 50 euros in 2019!

The 1997 is incredibly elegant and confident. Graceful impact and gentle attack. The most Burgundy-like of the Musars I’ve tasted. Still has a ton of youthful vigor, focus and energy. Zero palate weight. Elevated VA is allowing the aromatics to really take off. The most refined and beautiful Musar I’ve had yet, covering the broad spectrum of red berries, herbs, leather, spices and minerals. Funky yet refined.

This bottle is a masterclass in aging potential. I’ve had multiple vintages and honestly this older one is top.

Pale pinks and brown hues show remnants of its youth. Bright leather aromas complimented with cherry, pomegranate, and some old ripe blackberry. Drinks medium bodied and velvety smooth, still holding on to some solid structure. Lots of chocolate and, spices, minerals like notes.

I don’t remember where I was in 1997 but I’ll remember this bottle.

Desert island wine. Bacon, butterscotch and caramel. Such an unexpected find.

An honor to have this wine in Serge's remembrance #RIP

Cherry, earth, sweet tobacco, plum, with cedar and forest floor. Pure, fresh and excellent balance.
