Fully mature and drinking well. Leather, red fruits and ethereal nose. Kept getting better!

The 2014 Montrose has a bouquet that exudes class and sophistication: pure and mineral-driven black fruit, cedar and pencil lead, hints of blueberry developing with aeration although it never impedes upon the sense of terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-tinged black fruit, filigree tannin, a sweet core of blackberry and boysenberry fruit with a satin-like texture towards the finish. There is obviously some high quality oak used here, but it is simpatico with the fruit. For Montrose, you might argue that this is more modern in style and yet it is undeniably crafted with real panache to create a modern classic. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, March 2018)

Extremely funky, in a slightly good way though, dirty wine making on this one.

Wonderful wine. Truffle mushroom and leather on the nose. Velvety tannins and layers of tobacco and leather going on and on. Vintage 2004. A winner

In a weird coincidence both my brother and I brought this to a blind-tasting.
Mine = corked 😥
His = stunning and worth the praise!!

Beautifully evolved nose of leather, mulberry, brambly red berries, clove and dried mint. Medium-bodied with a regal countenance—there is still tons of structure, with mouth-coating fine grain tannin in abundance. Truly, this wine could go on and on and on in the cellar. The 1989 Château Montrose is not terribly fruit-driven, rather it's interior space is occupied by notes of dusty, clayey soil, cedar, black tea and spice. That wonderful impression of clove is on the finish, too.

Dark carob pencil lead. Lean sugars but opulent glycerol. Bright acidity. Dusty tannin.
