Sweet spices, roses and dusty stone give way to rubbed sage and rosemary as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino slowly evolves in the glass. This is pure elegance, silky-smooth and supple with a mineral tinge that adds a lovely depth to its black cherry fruit as brisk acidity adds a lovely tension. Saline minerals cascade throughout as a tinge of orange mingles with gritty tannins, and liquid stone notes linger through the long and staining finale. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2023)

Winner of tasting. Smooth, well integrated tannins. Grippy. Complex layered fruit.

Delicious. Starting to really come ‘round, the nose is dark cherry, loads of sandstone-rich gravel, dark spices. Concentrated flavors in the mouth. Quite a bit of tannin, but it’s quite soft, and the acids are pretty good for the year. So good now, this will be amazing in 5 years.

Ruby with full berry aromas and slight floral mineral spice notes. On the palate wild berry fruits with a central focus of fruit, spice integrated with fine grain tannins. Full body, long ending with cacao, espresso and mineral tang.

Wonderfully floral notes of violet and fruity ripe red cherry fused with red pepper flakes on the nose, then all this and adding tobacco and black pepper on the palette. Light in color but rich in complexity. Love!

Luminous medium-dark red. The captivating nose combines sour red cherry, violet, coconut, tobacco, minerals and a hint of white pepper. Densely packed and youthful but very fresh and lively; this already boasts a silky texture and considerable early appeal owing to its noteworthy sweetness of fruit. Subtle notes of red berries, herbs, graphite and flowers carry through into the rising, very long, vibrant finish. A knockout Brunello that further confirms winemaker Cecilia Leoneschi’s talent at making exceptionally good, very classic Brunellos. I can think of very few wines in all of Italy that have improved more than Castiglion del Bosco’s over the last decade. Well done. (Ian D'Agata, Vinous, April 2018)
