Chateau Montelena

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1997

1997 and holding up very well. Brisket, prune and baked plum, graphite sparkles, dried red currant, crumbly rose petal, cedar sawdust and baked black currant. Rich and half dried black cherry, similar with black currant, velvety thick robe of tannin, dark chocolate with dried raspberries, violets and cinnamon, fresh raspberry, mild black pepper, coffee splash and long long graphite shine. Amazed at the quality here, and stunned by the longevity.

Interesting. These '97 were pretty underwhelming huh?

for the initial hype of the vintage the vintage has underperformed. Pahlmeyer I have had a few times. Good but not GREAT. I also think that so many of the CA wines in the 90s are very producer driven and not vintage driven. Also was a decade where CA was really just beginning - I think the wines from 2012 thru 2016 will in 30 years amaze people at how good they r aged. CA industry has learned so so much since the early 90s in the vineyard and in the cellar

Now 2001s are pretty amazing and seem to have some reasonable life left in them. highly recommended 2001 dominus from a tasting in fall 2014 vs 5 others. Again the Husic right now would blow your mind at how representative it is of what CA Cab should be....
