The Wine Situation hosts everyone from winemakers to writers to find out what a person’s situation is…with wine. At the end of each episode, host Ellen Clifford wants to know the basics of her guests’ final thoughts on wine, drink and food. This month, Ellen talks with Kristin Fione of Adorato Wines !!!
This was edited for length!
QUESTION ONE
Ellen: Question number one: whatcha drinking? What are you into these days?
Kristin: Rosé . I love summer rosé. Frequency has great rosé. I’m also really into Cabernet Franc . There are a couple of great producers in Santa Ynez . And then I went to the Loire Valley in the spring…I had some amazing fifteen-plus-year-old Cab Franc from Bernard Baudry . But even the Cab Franc in the grocery store—oh my god, it’s my new favorite red.
QUESTION TWO
Ellen: Question number two is: do you have a favorite or unusual pairing?
Kristin: I do whiskey and red meat. I’m 100% a whiskey girl. I like all of them. I also like sparkling wine and donuts.
QUESTION THREE
Ellen: In homage to your entertainment career: do you have a wine movie or two that you enjoy?
AUTHOR NOTE: This segment just turned into a brainstorming session on wine in entertainment (Sideways, Bottleshock, A Walk in the Clouds, the Somm movies, Grand Crew and more), but we both landed on Uncorked, a great Prentice Penny movie, as the winner.
QUESTION FIVE
Ellen: Favorite snack?
Kristin: Cheese. I like a good charcuterie board. If it’s during the day, I’ll have some grapes.
QUESTION FIVE
Ellen: Question number five: what’s bringing you joy these days?
Kristin: Hanging out with friends. Cooking, hanging out with friends, and just enjoying each other’s company brings me joy.

Surprisingly yummy Cali Cab Franc. Starts out strangely carbonic, but after a 45 min decant it struts some very Chinon stuff. A light, zippy but woodsy-sweet lingering red. — 6 years ago

Juicy and fresh, speaking of lemons and linens, although also apples, just not the toasty type. — 6 months ago
