Black Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 1996

Bought at the winery after tasting in 1999, my first pilgrimage to Coonawarra. Opened very stinky but blew off with air over 30 mins to beautiful fragrant nose and that sweet soft tannin of an aged Coonawarra Cabernet. Drank gloriously over the next two hours. Still full of life at 29 years old. — 7 months ago

Reframed White Blend 2023

A new cuvée for the large Wynns organisation. A tribute to the Italian White varietals of Fiano, Arneis and Pinot Grigio. Grown on the Limestone Coast in South Australia. I always find Fiano appley in its native Campania but this was more citrusy with pear notes. This wine will sell well as a bistro style in the upcoming Australian summer. Very attractive packaging. Ladies who lunch will devour this. Hot off the press. Amazing value at only $16 AUD. — 3 years ago

Yalumba

The R Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 1990

A Collection of great Australian Reds - Christmas break up of the Tennis Group. This or the Wynns Centenary would have been the WOTN. A Delicious balanced mature claret showing leather spice with noticeable mocha , like coffee grounds. Cruising at 32 years and will sit on the plateau for a while yet. The Reserve was the forerunner to what Yalumba now call The Caley which is now their flagship. A top shelf Cabernet Shiraz from a great vintage utilising Yalumba’s extensive vineyard resources. — 4 years ago

Australian Cabernet Shiraz at its best can be awesome. Penfolds of course are the other great producer of this blend.

John Riddoch Coonawara Cabernet Sauvignon 1997

See Dominus note - a taste off of the two 1997s both from magnum. It was remarkable how the taste profiles were so similar with the Dominus having a little more camphor. Both excellent wines and I gave it to the Dominus by a point. The table vote gave it to the Wynns John Riddoch. No detailed tasting notes. — 7 years ago

Coonawarra Riesling 2017

Our first wine from the Wynns dinner with chief Wine maker Sue Hodder. This is a very approachable young yet soft Riesling aimed at early consumption. A fuller fruity palate with light acid. I could happily drink this now. Short term cellaring. — 8 years ago

Coonawarra Pedro Ximénez

Pedro Ximenez - a great name for a Mexican tennis player. These vines were planted at Wynns in the early 1900’s and were used to make Brandy when that was more popular than table wine. Caramel and floral notes with hints of rancio and raisin. 17% ABV. An excellent after dinner sipper. — 2 years ago

Michael Limited Release Coonawarra Shiraz 2009

The final wine at the Downs Club Filipino Dinner on Wednesday night - the mystery wine. This was a rich full bodied red from Coonawarra ( atypical for most Shiraz from this region) and I incorrectly picked McLaren Vale. This had a closed latent brooding nose and should have had a longer decant I feel. Ripe black fruits with some liquorice and plenty of tannin. This has a long way to go to achieve some nuance and detail. A whopper for a Coonawarra Shiraz. — 5 years ago

Dominus Estate

Dominus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1997

Had friends over for lunch on Saturday and had a match off with this 1997 Dominus with a 1997 Wynns John Riddoch - both from magnum. This Dominus I first tried at TriBeCa Grill in New York about 8 years ago and it was a wow wine for me. In fact the best Cabernet I had ever had outside of Bordeaux. No detailed notes but this was more savoury and less fruit driven than I remember. The consensus around the table was in favour of the Riddoch with me as the sole vote for the Dominus. No detailed tasting notes. — 7 years ago

Johnson's Block Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2004

Dark crimson in colour. Very dark for a 14 year old wine. This is the last year this was released as a Shiraz/Cabernet. Now from 2014 released as a straight Cabernet Sauvignon. On nose and palate masses of raspberries. I would struggle to pick this if tasted blind. Certainly no detectable Cabernet for me. Would think some Grenache influence with those raspberries - but none. Very powerful with a long future. Johnson’s Block was planted in 1954 making it the oldest surviving Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard in Coonawarra. — 8 years ago

Black Label 59th Vintage Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Delectable: this is the 2010 vintage which is the 55th vintage of the famous Wynns Black Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the 3rd of 5 bottles which I bought for the ridiculous price of $23.70 per bottle in 2013. An excellent vintage for Coonawarra (2010) Nose of black fruits , black olive, tomato leaf and earth. Oak in the background at 15 years of age. The palate is medium to full bodied with excellent fruit concentration finishing with firm tannins. At least another 10 plus years in the cellar. One of the great value for money wines in Australia and has been for decades. As good as their premium cuvée John Riddoch is , Black Label is the QPR King. I will enjoy my remaining 2 bottles over the next 6 plus years into 2030s if I have the will power. — a year ago

@Bob McDonald Truly remarkable value for over 30 years and consistently a top rated wine - for US consumers they are exceedingly good value in an age of possible 200% tariffs 🤗

@Bob McDonald, around 20 years ago I found an East Coast (US) source for the Wynn’s Black Label, and purchased the 2001/2002/2003/2004 vintages for around US$13-15 per bottle. I think those bottles have all been consumed, but they were uniformly good and, as you note, great QPR. And then, I completely stopped seeing them in the US (???).

@Doug Powers Strange not seeing them in the US anymore. Wynns are part of Treasury Wine Estates who own Penfolds, Seppelt, Wolf Blass, 19 Crimes , Lindemans etc. etc.

Alex 88 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Straight without decant. Nose has a vegetal and herbs component which i like. Rhubart, sage and spice and red fruits. Palate is quite light and smooth with mineral but still got enough tannin for storage for another 10 yrs. There is chocolate, nutmeg, red pepper, — 6 years ago

Coonawara Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Crimson with a Tawny rim showing its age. Mellow and resolved - round and soft at 17 years of age. Black Olive tapenade and chocolatey notes. Leading Australian Wine Scribe, James Halliday, describes Wynns Black Label Cabernet as “the most important Cabernet in Australia with a magnificent history “. The first vintage was 1954 and in a few months time when the 2018 is released it will be the 63rd. Amazing QPR - the current 2017 can be purchased for $31.90 AUD. The wine is matured in new (never more than 20%) and old French and American oak for between 12 and 18 months depending on vintage. — 6 years ago
