11 Heuchelheimer Schneeapfel 2021

Notes lost, but I recall this being off-dry and the nicest of the still ciders. Still prefer some fizz. Online notes:

Almost lovely - bright, whitish golden in the glass. All-round harmonious: fruity-refreshing on the palate and juicy seductive in aromas - drinking flow at its finest! And because it grew in Hesse and grown on Schneider's organic apple meadows, it's truly a real Hesse! It couldn't be more authentic!

Heuchelheim snow apple is a real Hessian local variety. The Rinn nursery found and multiplied them more than 100 years ago in Heuchelheim near Gießen. Its pulp is white as snow and remains bright even hours after cutting. Therefore, it is wonderful for fruit salads. At harvest time, we serve fresh slices from the Heuchelheim snow apple to the hand cheese in our Schoppenwirtschaft! The apple sauce cooked from it remains light and is finely fruity with fine acidity. It goes perfectly with our homemade organic waffles! From the Heuchelheim snow apple, the fruit farm on Steinberg cherishes and maintains 10 high trunks and 100 low trunks.

Schneider Wildlinge auf Löss 2.0 2019

As I recall, this was a little wild but filled with energy. Notes and info online:

Sweet - with a full bouquet, it presents itself elegantly in the glass. Its fine acidity vibrates and invigorates. Diverse play of aromas flatters the palate. The 2019 vintage stands out in youth with a special Cassis note. Apple can be so wonderful! His maturity potential: 20 years and more!

Wildlings on loess is our flagship. 21 unfinished apple seedlings stand wild and root-fast on a 1/2 morning most fertile loess, based on rock. Each tree counts over 90 Lenze and is a genetic individual - with its own growth and diverse aromatic fruits. The orchard is characterized by a very wild herb-rich flora and species-rich wildlife. The unique terroir is wonderfully reflected in this top cider. In 2006, we sowing freely from these ancient wildling trees - just like the many generations before us! 40 young wildlings on loess trees now enrich genetic diversity in Nieder-Erlenbach. From year to year, they are increasingly fruity. Wildlings on Löss 2.0 is the first wine made from fruits of both layers.

Super confectionary nose with apricot, kumquat, peach and more. Unreal minerals which is like a rock dust perfume. Really aromatic and wide open on the nose. Palate is so 21. Grippy and intense with rock candy like minerals and terrific peach and apricot fruit and some white cherries. This has fantastic structure and density. This will easily last 25+ years. Unreal concentration and such aggressive and unforgiving minerality which I am here for. This needs time to open up but what a fantastic wine. Wow after a a few hours this picks up major density. Awesome fruit and length. 9.6 now. — 5 months ago

7 Graue Renette Pinot Gris 2020

As I recall, here’s another tasty one in our cider study. Lost my notes, so here’s so info I dug up online:

Dry - balanced and fruity with hints of pear and yellow stone fruit.
100% single-variety and fully ripe hand-collected gray renets. Harvested at the beginning of October in our organic fruit meadows Mutzengraben and Hinter der Höll. Crisp dry and yet with fruity melt, it is a wonderful cider with development potential. Memory of a golden autumn blessing!

Grey renets exist worldwide in many varieties whose kinships have not yet been researched. However, they all have one thing in common: they are gray rusty, all look the same and even experts find it difficult to distinguish the individual varieties. The gray-renette is the gray swan among apples - unobtrusively dressed, but unique in its fruit. It is mild fruity and finely sour seasoned. We remove them dry and like to let them mature. This gives it an elegance - like a good Pinot Gris.

39 Ananasrenette 2021

Brilliant cider study organised by Tessa. Most of ciders we tasted were produced by Andreas Schneider of Obsthof am Steinberg in Nieder-Erlenbach, Hesse, Germany. Andreas is clearly a fervent believer in cider. To operate an apple orchard with over 250 different, mainly old and rare apple varieties, and to make cider from them cannot be an economical venture. But what’s life without passion! It clearly shows in his (mostly) single varietal ciders, all of which unique, complex, and very quaffable.

Unfortunately I lost most of my notes from this evening, but as I can recall this was my favourite one of the lot. Notes and info dug up online:

Semi-dry, refreshingly finely sour with a fruity nature. Its exotic character is comparable to the aroma grape variety Scheurebe! Long present on the palate, it sweetens you balmy summer nights and evenings by the crackling fireplace.

Pineapple rennet is a historical lover variety that we have been re cultivating organic since 1997. Their super small, but highly aromatic fruits already enjoyed the senior Albert Schneider so much as a child that he mopped them in the Preungesheim school garden. The spark jumped over to his son Andreas Schneider and so he immediately planted 100 trees. As a special table apple, it is enjoying increasing popularity in our farm shop. In the Advent season, he delights lovers' hearts as a mini baked apple with real gourmet potential! And for those who love it liquid: pure pineapple renette cider, a real rarity with a unique aroma! A very special gift from nature!

Sankt Martin 2020

Part of the still cider section in our cider study. Off-dry so pretty nice. As mentioned in previous notes, I found out that I prefer some bubbles and sugar in my cider from this study. Notes lost, so here are some online ones:

Semi-dry - fruit, seasoning and finesse! Orchard fruits collected very late from ancient high trunks - at St. Martin 2020! Mood on foggy autumn days with sunny lunchtime hours!

In the heart of the original Wetterau - a still wildly romantic area with wooded hills, grazed lowlands and rustic villages - the ancient high trunk apple trees of our Demeter colleague Wolfgang grow on the slopes on rugged rock and fertile loess. In his memory, the fruit trees have always been large and full! The traditional wine varieties thrive there - above all bean apple, winter rambour, prince apple, rose apple and other forgotten varieties. On three days late in autumn in wintry temperatures, we collected them by hand and spent our apple treasure home, gently squeezed and expanded with a lot of time and love. After almost a year of storage in the large tank, this wonderful essence of the orchard was bottled.

Schneider Apfel-Cuvée 2021

Another refresher which I remember enjoying. As mentioned, I lost my notes from our cider study, so here’s some info I dug up online:

Dry with a delicate bouquet, it presents itself elegantly in the glass. Fine acidity and fruity aromas invigorate the senses - apple can be so wonderful!

Blend of 6 apple varieties - Pineapple rennet, Bohnapfel, Boskoop, Goldrenette vom Mutzengraben, Kaiser Wilhelm, and Royal Short Handle.

Weiler Schlipf Spatburgunder 2015

A screaming stupid value for a solid Pinot Noir. Happy cherry, kirsch notes to please my pedestrian American palate, and pretty acidity. If it suffers from anything it’s maybe just a smidge too clinical to get poetic over. Germans. — 5 years ago

Steinacker Chardonnay 2015

Ungewöhnlich für einen "großen" Chardonnay: zurückhaltend in der Nase, wenig Fassnoten. Am Gaumen doch holzig, aber mit ausgeprägter Frische und Säure. — 8 years ago
