Ernie Els

Major Series Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

A classic Cabernet blend nose of Cassis, black currant and lead pencil. Lovely on the medium weight palate - beautiful balance with chocolate, blackberry and mocha. Easy to drink with totally resolved velvety tannins. Easily the standard of a top classed growth Bordeaux without the longevity. Drinking beautifully now. A blend of 60%Cabernet Sauvignon; 25% Merlot; 5% Petit Verdot; 5% Malbec and 5% Cabernet Franc. I bought this at the cellar door in Stellenbosch back in 2012. I have never seen it available for sale in Australia. Always admired Ernie as a golfer and I must say this wine matches the “Big Easy” ability as a golfer. Winemaker: Louis Strydom. — 4 years ago

@Delectable Wine this is the 2015 Ernie Els Cape Winemakers Guild.

Our first time every at the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction and we will make sure to come back! (Tasting was on 9/28/18).

Sixteenth wine at the Friday Auction Tasting for the Cape Winemakers Guild and the fifth red wine. This is made up of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Shiraz and 10% Cinsault by Louis Strydom from the Stellenbosch region. Aged for a total of eighteen months prior to blending and bottling. Only 200 cases produced with 60 being auctioned in 2018 and 60 auctioned in 2017.

Medium to deep ruby red in appearance. Coated with dark spices and berries on the nose with a touch of gravel at the back end. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus bodied. A bit savory on the front of the palate with herbs, spices and some dried cherries. Dry and long finish. Still a very young wine that needs some age to develop. Drink till 2032.

$$ - Tasted at the Cape Winemakers Auction. Average bid at auction was R3,957.00 ($46.54 a bottle) a case. Highest bid was R5,800.00 ($68.22 a bottle) and lowest bid was R3,400.00 ($39.99 a bottle). (91+)

Like most wines in today's line-up: marred by alcohol...
Loved the aromatics, quite evolved already...
