What an amazing recommendation from my local wine shop!!

Light gold color. Huge nose of butter and cream. Big wine, with camomile, butter, and just the right amount of acid. Smothers the palate immensely. No way this should be only £20!!!

I’ll be buying more!

Domaine Romain Collet

Valmur Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2011

My first grand cru experience and suddenly I see what all the fuss is about. On first sniff you know that there's something serious in this glass. Big, deep, ripe, powerful fruit smothers the midpalate but is picked up by great acidity and all held together with this strong mineraly backbone. Smells of crustacean shells and tastes of pears, apples, pineapples and even a little honey. Never before have I seen such depth of flavor and complexity in a white wine. Wish I had a better sitting to explore more of this 3oz delight. — 6 years ago

One of my favorite Somm tidbits from back in the day - obviously, not taking away from your experience - was that the grand crus represented the best instance of place, not necessarily the best wine.

Rocche Barolo Nebbiolo 2006

Pop and pour. A modern-styled barolo that seems fully mature. On the nose: coffee, black licorice, blood orange, tar, but the coffee/toast is dominant. On the palate: tar and aggressive, grainy tannin, which quickly smothers any fruit in a thick coat of dark chocolate and toast. Very grainy tannin on the finish, which strangely ends slightly watery. One more bottle, but best to drink it sooner rather than later. — 2 years ago

Weird. I associate this producer with top-flight wines.

@Tom Casagrande I get the impression there was a weird modern phase that, sadly, coincided with this and surrounding vintages. Other more recent vintages and older vintages have shown much better for me.

Temecula Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Earthy baked blueberry-boysenberry sauce smothers the senses. On the palate we are enveloped in a robe of silky tannins and astringent tart forest berries. Earthy herby goodness coats and tames young jam even in the '12 vintage.

Decanted 2 hours.

Oh wow. Reserve Cab that pulls from Justi Creek, Smothers-Remick Ridge and Monte Rosso Vineyards. Nose is so luscious and inviting, blackberry cobbler, black fruits and spice. Tannins are large but round. Such an easy drinking cab. — 9 years ago

The 2009 vintage from Bordeaux is awesome!! Starting to think vintage is more important than producer.

1 hour decant. Dark purple color. Massive nose of dark cherry and graphite. Wine has great depth and smothers the palate. Velvet texture too. High quality all the way with a medium plus finish. Loved it!!

1hr+ decant and got better with more air. Dark purple color. Fruit forward on the nose and palate with dark cherries. Wine is deep and smothers the mouth. Big tannins and medium plus acidity. More new world than old world in my mind. Wouldn’t turn a glass away, but overpriced in my mind, but maybe 5-10yrs would make a big difference. — 5 years ago

Great start to dinner! Refreshing nose with hints of apple, lemon, and sage. Smothers the palate nicely, and is much thicker than most Chards. Paired well with Beets and Trout. Definitely a go to everyday Chard in my mind. — 7 years ago
