Montes Do Paiva

Quinta do Sobreiro de Cima

Transmontano Touriga Nacional Blend

Bought while we were in Portugal.

Really enjoyed this one. More trevors taste than mine. Full body, some fruit, spice, drier side.

Casa do Joa

Feito de Joa Branco 2020

Lovely treat brought back by a friend from a vacation in Portugal. Super unique, even as far as amber wines go. Deep, complex, intense; spiced strawberry balsamic atop a vanilla custard. — 3 years ago

He's doing a great job. Watch. The mic echo is distracting enough that you won't cry the entire time.

Hard to put our finger on this one. Deep, rich flavors. Stewed plumb, toasted wood, mild black pepper. Enjoyed with curries glazed pork chops. — 3 months ago

Pérez Barquero

Verbenera Fino Montilla-Moriles Pedro Ximénez

In Montes-Morriles they use the Pedro Ximenez grape to make Fino, not Palamino as they do in Andalucía. I think it makes for a fuller, rounder Fino but it’s still the perfect food & summer drink in the dog days of summer. Raw dough & quinine on the nose, yeast & tonic on the palate- but truly lip smacking delicious. It’s also about 11$, one of the great QPRs. — 6 years ago

La Finca Clos d'Angel Colchagua Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

This week my Friday's Cabernet fix is a nice surprise from Chile.

Beautiful color of dark ruby with a burgundy rim.

Nice nose of sweet cherries, black currants, oak, licorice, vanilla bean, light vegetables, coffee, chocolates, tobacco, tree bark, molasses and black pepper.

Medium plus in body, smooth and elegant, with medium acidity and nice legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, sweet plums, light vegetables, wood, vanilla, cloves, tobacco, coffee, chocolates and peppercorn.

Medium plus in finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a very nice Cabernet from Colchagua Valley. Well balanced with nice complexity and a polished mouthfeel. Tangy finish making it interesting and enjoyable by itself.

A good food wine too. I paired it with a nice piece of steak.

Needs 90 minutes to open up properly and show what it can do, so take your time.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

$18.

Star Angel by Montes

Paso Robles Syrah 2009

Deep, opaque purple in the glass with just a hint of bricking on the edges. Rich, ripe aromas of red and black fruits with notes of blackberry, raspberry and plum with just subtitle notes of oaky smoke and raisin. Still very fresh and lively on the palate. Dark, juicy flavors of stewed fruits lead to bright acidity and well integrated oak with just a touch of dried herbs and soft, dusty tannins. The do so is long and rich and sticks to your teeth along with just a hint of spice. — 10 years ago

Quinta do Sobreiro de Cima

White Blend

I'm proud to be the very first one tagging this baco. A great surprise! What a sharp long wine, vigorous acidity, citron and aged fruits ... Surely over 80 years! Grapes were unknown to me, but very exotic, specially Codega de Larinho. From a non fashion region in Portugal, Tras-os-Montes, I invite courageous ppl to go for it! — 11 years ago

Alto Do Joa

Vinho Regional Transmontano Branco 2016

A complex and juicy Portuguese transmontano. It’s apparently been aged over 100 years. It has distinct tart notes of cherry, strawberry and a little orange peel that are smoothed over with hints of clove and vanilla. — 8 months ago

i-Latina Carménère 2016

Ms. Irene Paiva again shows that she can do no wrong, with this perfectly balanced Carmenere. The style is Bordeaux big, without being too thick or chewy. Lots of dark cherry and currant flavors in a refined fruit-forward mix really make this wine pop as a cocktail sipper. Color me impressed (one again!) — 6 years ago

Santa Valha Red Wine from Portugal. 2011. Nice violet color. Very strong soil/mushroom on the nose. Medium acidity. Dry. Alcohol. Berries and sour apple. There's certain brightness in the taste. Sunny flavor? Mineral on the finish. Complex wine. Very unique encounter. That's why you cannot stop trying new wines. — 11 years ago
