Carelle Sous La Chapelle Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2019

Lyle Fass

This is as good a Volnay as I’ve had in 2019 and is easily the best Volnay William has made. Haunting, deeply penetrative nose of minerals, pulverized rock dust, black and dark red cherries that are so elegant and so refined you’d think you’re drinking d’Angerville. Amazing scent of the best bubblegum ever but so subtle and refined. Confectionery but showing ultimate restraint. Beautiful. A work of aromatic art. Wow is that palate just an elegant masterpiece of balance and drop dead purity. This is so close to Brisset it’s not funny. Wow is this a divine bottle of Volnay. It’s so fine, so delicate and so refined. This is liquid silk. Cherries galore but the restraint here for how awesome and perfect this is is what keeps one coming back. An absolute masterpiece. No sure why this is not a 9.7. — 19 days ago

Côteaux de Tupin Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2017

Beautiful pronounced nose of ripe blue fruits, cherries, licorice, hint of bubble gum, violets and blood. Incredible complexity and texture is maintained despite use of carbonic maceration. The Beaujolais like fruit character is balanced with the salinity in mid palate, acidity and tannin. Awesome stuff - hard to resist now but will likely keep getting better. — 6 days ago

Cuvee William Pommard Pinot Noir 2019

Lyle Fass

Yowza. This smells very very complex. Huge Pommard stoniness. Stone powder. Pulverized stones. So complex and so ebullient. What a nose. Insane cherry flower. Huge red cherries with rock dust on them. Amazing depth on the nose. A 9.5 nose. Just insane. What a value this wine is. Candied and confectionary. Wow stunning confectionery inner mouth aromas. So juicy and sweet with unreal fruit. This kid gets just insane fruit. Again, with that super 19 balance. So fresh and so sappy. This is so good. Also a meaty dimension as well. Focused like a laser and such pretty mid season cherry fruit and ripe, sweet and velvety tannins. Really terrific length and what a finish. This is great. So complete. William had made the leap in 19. — a month ago

Les Chouacheux Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2019

Lyle Fass

Smoking nose of bright tangy mid to late season red cherries. Ethereal, confectionary and gorgeous. Really bright and lifted. Expansive and deeply aromatic. Layered and full of nuance. Really terrific nose. 9.6. Just stunning. Palate is sweet, silky, gamey and just flat out gorgeous with a very expressive hit of delicate and elegant minerality. This is mindblowing. Did not expect this to be that great. Beautiful light and translucent color as well. Such fine tannins. Hit of licorice develops on the nose. Really wonderful sweetness but also terrific depth and such finesse. Usually Beaune is more bigger and brawny but this one. Blind I’d say Volnay. Very impressive. — 19 days ago

Beautiful Santenay of 2017, red fruit is still dominant. I would cellar this a bit longer to let it come together. — a month ago

Pommard Rugiens 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2019

Lyle Fass

The top wine at Rebourgeon and this may be the best wine he’s ever made. Stunningly, deep, fresh, complex nose of cherry flower, spice cake, pulverized stones, licorice, mid to late season cherry and spice. Unreal complexity. But this 9.6 nose is still holding back. That’s what elite vineyards do. The nose is so harmonious. Wow, that is super elite. Just so elegant. One of the most elegant wines I’ve ever had from William if not the most elegant. This is only giving 15% of itself but that 15% is stunning. A sphere on the palate. So balanced, so much synergy. Stoney, floral, fruity and endless depth. Going deep in the ocean. You can sniff this nose as hard as possible and it still gives off unlimited depth. Outrageous nose. 9.7 ish. Palate is also a 9.7 but has so much room to improve. Unreal sweet fruit and wonderful slippery character. Tannins, acid and fruit all in perfect harmony. Just a stunning bottle of Rugiens and the best bottle of wine young William has made so far. — a month ago
