Cornerstone Cellars

The Cornerstone Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2007

Shay A
9.2

During the month of January, the Wednesday Wine Committee has a unique format...the sparkler, whites and dessert wines can be from any vintage and any location, but the reds must be from the 2007 vintage. It was my first time providing a wine for a lunch, so I was excited to see how it showed. As always, all wines were served blind.

The nose on this smelled of sweet American oak. Because of that, I leaned Spanish or Italian. Per Lloyd from Dumb & Dumber, “I was way off!” Very surprised to see this was from Napa. Vanilla dominated nose. Red, blue and black fruit on the palate. A fairly sweet finish.

69 Miles

Yolo County Chardonnay 2024

69 Miles – Chardonnay 2024
Yolo County, California – USA 🇺🇸

Overview
An entry-level label of Lloyd Cellars, this Chardonnay showcases Rob Lloyd’s signature richness at a more approachable price point. The name 69 Miles represents the exact distance from the vineyard source to the winery’s crush pad—a nod to the precision and timeliness in harvesting and processing that preserves freshness.

Aromas & Flavors
Concentrated notes of mango, pear, and white peach lead, accented by buttercream and a touch of vanilla. The wine balances ripe fruit intensity with a gentle creaminess, offering opulence without heaviness.

Mouthfeel
Medium to full-bodied, creamy yet lifted, with a crisp streak of acidity that carries through the finish. The contrast between richness and freshness makes it both indulgent and food-friendly.

Winemaking Notes
Crafted under the careful hand of Rob Lloyd, known for his polished California Chardonnays. Though positioned as an entry-tier, the attention to vineyard sourcing and quick-to-crush handling gives this wine a high-quality edge.

Food Pairing
Perfect with roasted chicken, creamy pasta primavera, or seared scallops. Its tropical fruit core also plays beautifully with spiced dishes like Thai curry.

The Verdict
An affordable but well-crafted Chardonnay that delivers Lloyd’s signature plush style while keeping a refreshing edge. Proof that even at the entry-level, care in sourcing and timing can result in standout quality.

✨ Personal Highlight: I love how the story of 69 miles reflects vineyard-to-winery precision—it makes the wine’s freshness and balance even more meaningful. A perfect example of how detail in winemaking can elevate even an “everyday” label. Cheers!

St. Francis Winery

Reserve Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Joe Martin, established St. Francis Vineyard in 1971, planting 22 acres of Chardonnay & 60 acres of Merlot. He opened the winery in 1979 with partner Lloyd Canton. Dk berry fruits, spice & cedar aromas. Black cherry and blackberry flavors with tobacco, oak and pepper spice. Well structured firm tannins (needs decanting) lingering, complex ending with subtle earthy tones. Very Nice, easy drinking will age a bit. — 8 years ago

Lloyd Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2019

Lloyd by Robert Lloyd – Pinot Noir – 2019
Sta. Rita Hills AVA – Santa Barbara County – USA 🇺🇸

Overview
100% Pinot Noir from the cool, wind-swept Sta. Rita Hills, known for producing concentrated, intensely flavored wines. This vintage leans toward a richer, more powerful expression while maintaining varietal character.

Aromas & Flavors
Ripe red and black berries, cherry compote, cedar, vanilla, and baking spices with a touch of clove and cola.

Mouthfeel
Fuller-bodied for Pinot Noir with warm fruit, medium acidity, and firm, well-structured tannins. Generous but balanced, with a lingering spicy finish.

Food Pairings
Grilled salmon, pork tenderloin, duck breast, mushroom pizza, or truffle pasta.

Verdict
A bold, flavorful Sta. Rita Hills Pinot with depth, warmth, and structure. Ideal for those who enjoy a richer, more extracted style without losing elegance.

Did You Know?
Sta. Rita Hills is one of California’s most acclaimed Pinot regions, thanks to maritime winds that slow ripening and concentrate flavor, a key reason why the AVA consistently produces high-impact, age-worthy Pinots.

Sonoma-Loeb

Envoy Carneros Chardonnay 2022

Bright yellow gold. Inviting nose of dried pineapple and yellow flowers. Firm acidity leads the medium full palate which confirms the nose and adds French oak inspired vanilla, white pepper and a hint of honeyed green apple. Oaky, pome-y notes continue on the moderate finish. A rare, Burgundian style Chardonnay from Carneros which makes it not quite what one would expect from the appellation (especially if one is a Rombauer or Lloyd drinker), but an excellent accompaniment to a wide range of heartier white wine fare. Drink now through 2027. — 2 years ago

Spicier / bolder nose than what comes through on the palette. Soft, smooth, light and approachable for essentially any meal. I almost wish it had more character but I think is a crowd pleaser because of its "easy going" nature (LLoyd) — 9 years ago
