Old Vines Napa Valley Petite Sirah 2009

Showing zero signs of decline, this one poured an inky black into the glass. Nose of black and purple fruit, baking spices. The entry was a lot of young black fruit, olive tapenade. Very robust with a rounded mouthfeel up front. Finishes with sweeter roasted cedar tannin but surprisingly there was a lot more tannin on the finish than I had thought there would be. Hint of roasted BBQ meats to the finish. This one could go another five years in my opinion, and might even improve a bit on the finish in the next one or two. — 10 days ago

Old Vine Contra Costa County Petite Sirah 2010

Delightful, bold in the mouth, dark fruit and a little earthiness and spice on the nose. Crushed boysenberry and blackberry preserves on the palate. Spice and oak ethereally throughout with a touch of vanilla oakiness on the finish. Delightfully complex and a little sweet with some baking flavors could make this a good fall-Thanksgiving wine. — 7 hours ago

Amapola Creek

Monte Rosso Vineyards Petite Sirah 2016

2016 vintage opened on 11.16.2019. Still young and needs time in the bottle, yet impressive as all of Richard Arrowood’s wines are! Had with spicy meat chili which brought out the soft tannins that were trapped by all the young berry fruit. — 2 days ago

Miljenko's Selection Yountville Petit Sirah 2014

Inky dark color. This wine is perfect for patio sitting on a cool Fall night. Nothing petite about it. Big, masculine, and lots of tannins. Blueberries and licorice. The long finish provides a hint of pepper. Well balanced. The 2012 is still my favorite, but with time this should improve even more. — 9 days ago

Heart of the Hill Petite Sirah 2015

Dense dark purple-red, highly extracted pigment. Herbal and red fruit notes in nose. Black currant flavor, fine grained tannins in finish initially, cranberry aftertaste, high skin astringency. Massive tannins remain after three hours; decant longer else age, age, age this sucker... This could prove a really nice wine for the cellar. Solid seed bitterness backbone in this wine, but the skin and possibly stem astringency is the challenge in deciding whether to opt for aging versus decanting. Great varietal expression nonetheless. A bold yet largely successful take on an old school West Coast varietal. An alternative: decant 24 hours and the flavors are lovely, but the large tannins remain fairly massive. — 21 days ago

Shafer Vineyards

Relentless Napa Valley Syrah Petite Sirah 2016

This wine honors long-time Shafer Winemaker Elias Fernandez and his relentless pursuit of quality. Sourced from a single ridgetop vineyard adjacent to the southern border of Stags Leap District, gravelly clay loam, sourced from a rugged and remote part of the estate, the grapes for Relentless are a blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah, which is a more bucolic grape than Syrah, providing for a blend that becomes an extraordinarily lush and rich wine. Aged for 30 months on 100% new French oak, deep Ruby with aromas of concentrated dark berry fruit and a hint of smoky pepper spice. Layered meaty flavors of blackberry, cherry and blueberry explode on your palate and subtle tannins relax to a nice long finish, great mouthfeel. This is certainly one of the best Syrah’s I have tasted. Will age well! — 14 days ago

Machete Napa Valley Red Blend 2017

Wow, a Fav! Had the new ‘17 vin. Blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah & Grenache & aged for 10 months on French oak (40% new). Deep Ruby with aromas of black fruits & sweet spice. On the palate, ripe blueberries, plum & sweet cherry with oak & vanilla spice, Lingering finish, good length, tannins are soft with slight grip. Good structure, ending with fruit character and mineral tones, drinks well, needs decanting. Produced with 12 different labels. Nice! — 8 days ago

Rattlesnake Ridge Petite Syrah 2017

Holy Smokes! Happy I have another sitting around, poured out oh so inky. Def need a good decanting but boy did it open up to some big bold notes. It was so smooth on the finish, going down as a top Turley in my book! — 3 days ago
